Current Business
Arbor Day Planning
Location- Woodland Park
Fred distributed and reviewed copies of a draft map of the layout of Woodland Park and his
preliminary thoughts on where booths, formal ceremonies, bus drop off points, lunches,
backpack stations, etc., might be located. Fred did stress this was preliminary and members
should not pay attention to labeled names on environmental booths because they are just
placeholders. Members discussed and provided input regarding the logistics and functionality of
proposed locations. Because of the current condition of the playground, Barb will encourage
teachers to bring games to play during the lunch breaks which will not be near the playground.
• Students and School District 45 communications
Barb said she had sent out emails to the teachers, however hadn't received any replies. Fred
mentioned that Bette is working on the busing with transportation. Fred said that Arbor Day
funds may have to be used for the extra bus to deliver the high school student volunteers
separately and early by 8:30 — 8:45, however there are adequate funds to do so. Barb will follow
up with the transportation as Bette is in Italy. Barb will send the map to the teachers ahead of
time. Fred suggested that environmental stations not get the map ahead of time, so that they do
not go set up booths and neglect to check in. It was noted that there will not be as many 3rd
graders this year, which will make it easier on finding booths.
• Environmental Booths
Tony gave a report on the status of the booths, noting there are nine confirmed and two maybes.
Tony mentioned booths he has not had confirmed yet and members provided input on other
organizations to try. Tony listed the confirmed booths as: Flathead Electric, FHS Wood Shop,
Wise Vegetation, APHIS, Flathead Land Trust, Flathead National Forest, Invasive Species,
DNRC Forestry, Montana Nursery and Landscape Association, and Valley Recycling. Tony
listed the maybes as: Kari Gabriel with Raptors and Flathead Conservation District. Fred said
he'd like 16 booths to allow for appropriate breaks for booth hosts.
• Volunteers
Fred said that Park Side Credit Union anticipates sending a couple of people. Judy said she had
put it out to the garden club, however hasn't received much response. Fred said he will try to
find a smaller project in case garden club members want to do something.
• Sponsorships/Fundraising
Terry told the group that sponsorships are going quite well. Terry said to date $3450.00 has been
received and he is anticipating receipt of a couple more sponsorships. Terry said he feels that
sponsorships will end up being close to $4,000 and there is an additional $750 Arbor Day grant.
• Logistics
Barb asked if Dave was still helping Vic with logistics and asked for Dave's phone number so
that Vik and Dave could talk and plan. Fred said regarding the logistics, now is the time to put
together a list of what each person needs and email it to him and he will in turn send it to Dave
and Vik Fred said this is things such as plates and napkins, tarps, etc. Fred also mentioned that
Dave got the tree seedlings in the past and wondered if Rick would be able to get them this year.
Tony said he'd check with Rick on the seedlings. Fred suggested that more meetings will be
needed in the next month to hammer out details.
• Lunch/Food
Fred noted that Costco pizza had been decided on and Andrea should put together a list of
additional items she will need such as coffee, etc. Terry suggested asking Costco to donate the
pizza and said he will stop in and ask them.
• Community Outreach - Judy
Judy told Fred he needed to schedule a meeting with Maggie of Kalispell Brewery to brainstorm
a plan to promote Arbor Day. Fred said because this is a brand new idea, he is open to
discussing any type of promotion Maggie might be interested in.
• T-shirts - Fred
Fred said he will be placing the t-shirt order.
• Media — Fred
Fred informed members that KPR staff will start doing social media posts in April. Fred said he
has invited the first lady of Montana and doubts she will come, however the invite has been
extended. Fred said he will have Chad invite the Mayor. Barb suggested Maggie Voison be
invited if anyone happens to know her.
Miscellaneous Business
Program Development Grant.
Fred gave a briefing on the program development grant. Fred explained that one component of
the grant is to utilize grant funding to offset the 50150 share cost to the homeowner with a
onetime $75 owner cost. Lisa and Fred explained that the grant looked to targeting areas that
were identified in the partial inventory update as lacking tree canopy and which also might be
lower income areas. Fred explained he would like the board to canvas the neighborhood with
50150 cost share flyers in the next month to promote this one time opportunity. Fred said that the
grant proposal also includes a radio spot. Members pinpointed April 191' at 6 pm to canvas
neighborhoods, according to maps provided by Fred. Fred informed members that 50150 one
time grant cost brochures were mailed out today to all residents who recently had a tree cut
down. Lisa asked that members track their volunteer hours specifically related to this grant as
the hours count as in -kind.
Farmer's Market Booth
Fred asked members to discuss their Farmer's Market booth plan and determine how often they
wanted to have the booth. After discussion members determined that they would host a booth a
few times; possibly two or three times at the beginning of the season, starting May 5I'. Barb said
her and Vik will be able to help on the 5'.
Mi -.cell an ern s
Fred informed board members that Dusty had given his two weeks' notice and was returning to
the private sector. Fred said he wants to postpone the small tree pruning workshop for the time
being.
Fred mentioned that one of the boards projects for this year was to work with FVCC to promote
trees on their campus and possibly them obtaining the Tree Campus USA certification. Fred
explained to date that he has not gotten much interest from his contacts at the college. Fred
suggested if members know anyone they could contact at the college it may help to reach out to
someone in a higher position. Judy suggested talking to Colleen Unterreiner, the FVCC
Foundation Director as she might be an avenue.
Tree City USA
