Patrick, City Manager Kalispell City Airport September 22, 2008 BACKGROUND: Recently several questions have arisen about the operations at the Kalispell City Airport. These questions include items such as; jet fuel being sprayed over residents of the City; jet traffic at the airport; and, hours of operations. RECOMMENDATION: Discuss each item in as much detail as the Council wishes and to view a short narrative about General Aviation airports in general. Patrick City Manager General .aviation Fast Facts • General Aviation encompasses all flight operations that are not part of the military or the airlines. ® 166 million passengers a year fly on the small airplanes of General Aviation, making it our nation's largest "airline." America's crop yields would drop by 50% without the routine agricultural use of General Aviation. General Aviation is responsible for 1.3 million jobs and $102.1 billion of annual economic activity in the U.S. e America is blessed with nearly 20,000 airports. The airlines only serve 540 of these, or less than 3 %, with 70% of airline traffic going to only 30 hub airports! General Aviation encompasses 95 % of all aircraft and 75 % of all takeoffs and landings in the U.S. Almost 70% of the 31 million hours flown by GA every year are flown for business purposes. GA is safe. Since 1950, the General Aviation accident rate per 100,000 flying hours has been cut by SG%. * Air shoves are America's #2 live spectator sport, with 26 million annual visitors. 90% of all new airline pilots were trained by private civilian flight schools.
