Resolution 1480 - Protest of Planned Service Station - GNRRE RESOLUTION No. 1486, A RESOLUTION OF PROTEST AGAINST THE ERECTION OF A SERVICE STATION FOR THE SALE OF GAS AND OILS AT RETAIL ON GREAT NORTHERN RIGHT-OF-WAY. BE IT RE50LVED BY T113 CITY GOMM OF TIE GITY OF KALISPEU� MONTANA: WHEREAS, it has been called to the attention of the City Council of the City of Kalispell by numerous business men of the City that the Great horthern Railway Company has granted a permit for the erection of a service station for the sale of gas and oils at retail on the South side of its right-of-way facing Railroad 3treet between Main Street and First Avenue Iffest in the City of Kalispell; and WHEREAS, the City of Kalispell in co-operation with the Great Northern Railway Company have in the past years expended large sums of money in the improving and beautifying the grounds of the RailvEy Company along Railroad Street by planting shrubs, trees, making lawns, constructing walks, paving streets and drives, maintaining all of said improvements and otherwise improving the abutting property and contemplate continuing of such work and further beautifying and improving of such grounds; and WHEREAS, it appears to the City Council that the erection of a service station such as planned would detract from the appear- ance of what has already been done and what is planned to do in the future, and will commercialize the same and establish a pre- cedent that will discourage the further improvement of said grounds as planned; and WHEREAS, the carrying on of such retail business on Great lNorthern property is a discrimination against like business in the City of Kalispell and unfair to those who are already engaged in such business, all of whom are patrons of the oreat Northern Rail- way Company, and is a fire hazard; and �`VTIERTAS, the Great Borthem Railway Company has always co- operated with the City of Kalispell in all matters pertaining to the general welfare of the City and the business interests therein and has not in the past acted in any manner other than fair and impartial to the various interests of the City; BE IT THEREFORE FTTRTt-1ER RESOLVED, that the City Council of t1be City of Kalispell in special session assembled for the purpose of acting upon this Resolution, do hereby respectfully and urgently protest to the Great i�orthern Railway Company against the allowing of' such service station to be erected and that steps be taken at once by it to cause the suspension of all work thereon, and that said Company by such action establish a precedent that no retail business of any kind be permitted to be carried on upon its proper- ty in the City of Kalispell, and that certified copies of this Resolution be delivered and forwarded to the proper officials of the Great i�orthern Railway Company by the Mayor and City Clerk.
