Email/Energy Efficiency Program at CityFred Leistiko From: Fred Leistiko Sent: Tuesday, May 04, 2010 3:51 PM To: 'todd.c.thompson@jci.com' Subject: Energy efficency program at Kalispell City 1 nrks The City Manager passed your email on to me to look over, I have a second position at Kalispell as the Facilities Manager for the City. I have been tagging along with the Safety Inspection Team for the City as they go about auditing the facilities of the City and have been finding some very interesting situations. It is my objective to put together a comprehensive Facilities Condition Report for the senior management of the City. In the short time I have been working with the safety team I have come to the conclusion that we do have an energy efficiency problem in a lot of our shops and maintenance facilities of the city. The FCR that I am currently designing to collect the base data on all structures owned by the City will identify the energy sources for these structures, but will not depict the usage nor identify the inefficiencies of each system. It is my gut feeling that about 30% of the energy is wasted. Now, if you can help me identify the inefficiencies in each of these systems and show me how we can improve each system, we might have something we can work on together. If we can verify the savings possibilities and show some upgrade efforts that can be put into place, we will be on the right track. I cannot prove to senior management that we need to spend the money to upgrade facilities or build new, more efficient, facilities without hard data. Also, we cannot apply for ARRA funds to upgrade and build new, modern facilities without facts. Is this something Johnson Controls can help with? Do you know of any grant funds we could apply for to track energy performance gaps? Does JCI do energy audits for public facilities? Fred A. From the notes I took during our discussion, methane recovery at your WWTP, maybe street lighting, HVAC retrofits at your Justice/Police building, and peak energy demand management on your facilities are areas you've considered for energy conservation retrofits. One of the central points of discussion was QECB funding through the State for energy conservation projects. I'll keep you posted on anything I hear from the State regarding QECB and other funding programs. If you agree, I'd like to discuss the City of Kalispell with my energy engineer, and begin the process for conducting an energy evaluation on your facilities. Please let me know if you see value in this. Kind regards. Todd Thompson Public Sector Solutions Johnson Controls, Inc. Phone: (801) 419-7676 Email: todd.c.thomi)son@ici.com
