RE: Visit to GlacierThank you so very much for your input and advice! I will for sure purchase some Bear Mace for this trip. I’ve not spent much time in Grizzle country other than Yellow Stone/Tetons. I’ve spent months up in the Sierra’s and believe if I do Hike solo I’ll be humming and singing hoping to wake and give notice to any sleeping giants. Especially when the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. Sounds like you have a beautiful piece of property out there! congrats. And you have beaver problems, wow. Here I LA I have traffic and neighbor problems. Again thanks for the info and I hope to have a wonderful trip. Thanks! Coming to NW Montana to hike is a great venture for anyone. We have some great areas to hike in. However, I must warn you that it is also very, very dangerous to backpack in this part of the country solo unless you have a large side arm and plenty of bear mace. The bear population has been growing steadily for the last 10 years and grizzly bears are sited close to towns and ranches more frequently than ever before. I have a ranch in the Swan Valley about 60 miles SSE of Kalispell and we are noticing bear signs a lot. I have a pilot at our airport that has a contract with the Fish and Game Department to track wolves and grizzly bears that have been collared. He tells me that I have at least six bears within a mile of my place and one pack of wolves. I am very cautious about going into the woods to work on beaver problems alone. The worst thing you can do is surprise a sleeping grizzly bear on a warm afternoon. It will come up fighting and that is not something you want to deal with. Someone taking you from the commercial airport to Apgar for $45 is a pretty good deal. I would take that deal. Of course there are no large motels in the Apgar village area that provide transportation to and from the Park. Just guessing, I would say it is a 50 or 60 mile trip from Glacier Park International Airport and Apgar Village. Welcome to Montana, let me know if you need any more info. We are the small general aviation airport in the City of Kalispell. You will be flying into the commercial airport about 15 miles north of town, out in the county. Fred A. Thanks for providing a link to reach out. I’m a solo backpacker/lover of the wild with 6 days in your area (Aug 4-10). I’ve noticed its fairly difficult to get from the airport to Apgar without renting a car. What options are there? I spoke with one gentleman who would do it for $45 bucks… Any ideas? Suggestions? Input would be wonderful. Thank you!
