SUBJECT: Grant Acceptance —Kalispell Business Improvement District
MEETING DATE: June 4, 2018
BACKGROUND: On October 18, 2017, Governor Steve Bullock's office announced that the
Kalispell Business Improvement District's application, in coordination with the City of Kalispell,
to the Montana Department of Commerce Main Street program was awarded $10,000. Please see
the grant announcement attached.
The purpose of this funding is to design the Kalispell Trail portion of the USDOT TIGER project
such that it is integrated with Historic Downtown Kalispell. This may include concepts for features
including trailheads, street connections, wayfinding signage, coordinated street fixtures or
furniture, etc. to smoothly integrate usage of the trail with the downtown area of Kalispell. The
Main Street Grant award of $10,000 is to be matched with $3,000 from the Kalispell Business
Improvement District with these funds used to fund planning and design specific to the integration
of the trail being built in the Core Area and the historic downtown of Kalispell.
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council accept the Montana Main Street
Program Grant to fund Kalispell Trail design integration with Historic Downtown Kalispell.
FISCAL EFFECTS: The Montana Main Street Program Grant would provide $10,000 to the
Kalispell Business Improvement District (KBID), to be matched with $3,000 from the KBID to pay
design costs of the Kalispell Trail design for integration of the Trail with Downtown.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested and approved by Council.

for the Kalispell Trail Economic Development & Design Plan.
The Montana Main Street Program assists communities in revitalizing and strengthening downtown
commercial districts, while also offering technical assistance, expertise and competitive grant funding
to its member communities. The Department looks forward to working with the City of Kalispell to
successfully assist with projects that improve the economic, historic, and cultural vitality of Kalispell's
downtown.
