05/06/04 - National Prayer DayPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, national days of prayer have been part of our country's heritage since the first one was declared by the Continental Congress in 1775; and WHEREAS, in 1952, Congress called upon the President to set each year a National Day of Prayer; and WHEREAS, May 5, 1988 marked the signing of a bill which passed unanimously through Congress, making the first Thursday of each May the National Day of Prayer, and WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer Task Force, an independent, non -governmental group, would like everyone to recognize this day as a day to acknowledge God and give thanks for the many blessings our country has received; to recognize our need for personal renewal of moral values; to seek spiritual guidance for our nation's governmental and community leaders; to commit ourselves to the foundation of marriage and family; and to intercede for healing and recognition within our nation. WHEREAS, the 2003 National Day of Prayer theme is "Righteousness Exalts a Nation". NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pamela B. Kennedy, Mayor of the City of Kalispell, in keeping with this tradition, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 6, 2004 as a DAY OF PRAYER in the City of Kalispell and call upon every citizen to gather together on that day in homes, at places of business and at places of worship, and pray for the return of the hearts of all mankind to righteous virtues.
