Kalispell Fire Department did Fifty-six business inspections, inspected the Flathead
County Grounds for hazards before the Fair. The Fire Department gave six fire
extinguisher demonstrations with live bums and answered thirty-five tall grass and weed
complaints. Most of the fire hydrants have been flowed. The Fire Department is now in
the process of color -coding each hydrant. The Fire Department did thirty-four car seat
safety checks.

• Girl Scouts Talena Jensen and Amanda Watt complete Christmas Village folk art
painting with traditional scenes;
• Bruckhauser Pool - completed another season.

• irrigate all city parks, and repair irrigation equipment;
• mow, weedwhip and irrigate all 24 City Parks;
• weed and dead head all City Gardens;
• move the Christmas Village around for painting;
• water downtown trees in wells;
• repair irrigation at KYAC;
• repair backstops at KYAC;
• spray roundup in various right of ways and City Parks;
• water City owned trees and Highway 93 North Corridor;
• fertilize Woodland Park, Depot Park, Main Street;
• daily rest room cleaning & trash removal at all City Parks and downtown areas;

All programs ran very well this month, as indicated below. As
the Summer winds down, programing for the Fall and Winter
Brochure is prepared for printing, as well as supervising
seasonal staff, registration for programs, and numerous

1. Design for Phase II North Main/Lawrence Park approved by MDT, final
Bridge design done. Environmental review completed. River easement
completed. Cultural review completed. Design of bridge abatement and
GeoTecwork in progress. Sample drilling completed. Final design submitted
this month and bidding authorized to begin August.
2. Meridian Trail Connector/Highway 93 to KYAC Trail, approved by MDT.
Consultant selection complete. DBE is set at 0%. Contracts are signed.
Design in progress. First design sent to MDT for review and
recommendations. Second submittal completed and approved. Received
authorization to go out to bid.
• Airport Advisory Board: Awaiting results of F.A.A. Airport Study. Work continues
on FAA study. Mowing and repairs are being made.
• Bruckhauser Pool: Preliminary design work, public education, marketing and
promotional for upcoming election November 6.

SUBJECT: Monthly Activity Report for August 2001

Highlights of monthly activity forthe operating divisions of the Public Works
Department for the month of August 2001 are as follows:
Met with representatives of DNRC to discuss utility issues related to Section 36.
Met with City Manager and Bucky Wolford to discuss issues related to the proposed Glacier
Mall development.
Met with Fire Chief and CED Director to review actions necessary to the demolition of the
Keno Inn.
Continued assistance to Fire Department to construct a fire apparatus test site near the
WWTP.
0 Arranged for ISCO to conduct a calibration of the new flow meter at the WWTP to identify
whether it is registering properly. Results indicate the meter is accurate and the plant flow is
approximately 20% greater than previously thought.
0 Attended a Transportation Seminar in Missoula sponsored by Sen. Baucus and Rep. Rehberg.
0 Met with Kiwanis to present information and answer questions about the Streetscape Project.
0 Continued support of Community Economic Development Infrastructure Subcommittee to
update the Kalispell plan.
0 Continued project review meetings for Sunny View Lane SID.
0 Attended MDOT Highway 93 South utility task force meeting to discuss utility installation
and relocation.
0 Worked with a Consultant to develop a pavement management system.
0 Continued working with the Engineer and Contractor on the Mountain View Development
infrastructure.
0 Continued development of final Facility Plan document and rolling in changes resulting from
new projects and WWTP flow data revisions.
0 Continued development of the Claremont Street sidewalk project.
0 Conducted utility update field surveys in the following areas: Village Greens and North
Main Street.
0 Researched, located and marked property pins on east and south boundaries of the Airport for
the Parks Department.
0 Conducted sealed bid process for "Dual Frequency GPS System".
ENGINEERING DIVISION continued...
0 Responded to miscellaneous R/W questions and requests.
0 Obtained current, approximate, centerline road digital files from County, modified these for
use by pavement management software, plotted two worksheets and forwarded all to
pavement management pilot project.

0 Continued regular maintenance of City vehicles and machinery.
0 Responded to numerous road calls.
0 Repaired computers on Elgin Sweeper.
0 Repaired water leaks on the Public Works' van.
0 Made repairs to the Parks' Toro.
0 Service call - repaired broken deck, hydraulic hose, and replaced fuel hoses on the Parks'
mower.
0 Replaced roller bearings and fabricated skids for the Parks' flail mower.
0 Repaired pull starter and replaced spark plug on the Parks' pump.
0 Replaced all brakes and drums on the Solid Waste garbage truck.
0 Replaced computer module and shock absorber mounts, welded broken gravel screens, and
repaired wiring and replaced engine computer on the Elgin sweeper.
0 Replaced clutch and made transmission repairs on Building Dept.'s pickup.
CENTRAL GARAGE continued...
Rebuilt main broom on the mobile sweeper.
Repaired pickup head and curtains on Tymco Sweeper.
Repaired auto grease system on the garbage truck.
Repaired pump drive belt on sewer jet truck.
Replaced lift cylinder and attaching parts on the garbage truck.
SANITARY/STORM SEWER DIVISON
0 Continued video and jet cleaning of sewer lines Monday through Thursday.
0 Performed weekly maintenance of sixteen lift stations each Friday.
SOLID WASTE DIVISION
0 Delivered 15 containers to new customers: 1-90 gallon, 14 -100 gallon, 0 -400 gallon,
0 -300 gallon.
0 Repaired 6 containers and responded to 8 violations.
0 Continued weekly garbage service and alley cleanup.
STREET DIVISION
0 General sweeping and maintenance of City Streets and alleys.
0 Swept and flushed for the chip sealing.
0 Patched manholes.
0 Patched curb line at Wyoming WN.
0 Valve box repair at Sunnyside Drive.
0 Dug up the WWTP force main.
0 Cut out bridge on Airport Road.
0 Cleaned and washed Wash Bay at City Shop.
0 Removed steel from City Yard and took to Pacific Steel & Recycling.
0 Assisted the Water Division with curb stop repair and service line repair.
0 Assisted with the study of street conditions.
WATER DIVISION
WATER PRODUCTION & STORAGE:
0 Produced 183 M gallons of water: 47 M gallons upper zone and 136 M gallons lower zone.
0 Injected 625 gallons of sodium hypochlorite, 12% solution to maintain an average chlorine
residual of 0.34 PPM throughout the system.
0 Continued routine maintenance on all pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, grounds,
buildings, controls, testing, and record keeping.
0 Reviewed, commented, and met with Roger Noble on O & M Manual for Noffsinger Spring.
0 Received shipment of 1230 gallons of sodium hypochlorite.
WATER PRODUCTION & STORAGE continued...
0 Spot inspected 10% of new meters installed.
0 Scrapped, primed and painted Noffsinger Spring house exterior.
0 Prepared for the lead and copper testing program.
0 Installed new CL2 line from chlorine room at Noffsinger Springs.
0 Installed additional CL2 tank at Noffsinger Springs.
0 Repaired CL2 pump from Buffalo Hill Well.
0 Repaired CL2 leaks at Grandview Well.
0 Wired in CL2 alarm system for Noffsinger Springs.
WATER CONSTRUCTION AND SYSTEM REPAIR:
0 Tagged 63 delinquent accounts on the West Side of Kalispell.
0 Completed 101 work orders during the month August.
0 Continue to service meters.
0 8x3/4 tap at 641 Sunnyside.
0 Repaired a 1" service line at 190 Glenwood.
0 Repaired a 2" service line at 2011 5th Avenue East.
0 Did a 8x3/4 water tap at the new location (old Rosauer site) of the Thrift Center.
TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISON
0 Continued regular maintenance of signals, signs, luminaires, barricades, sight obstructions,
and Airport lighting.
0 Changed out bad photocell on luminaries.
0 Barricaded and signed for Hot Rod Parade.
0 Took down the Hockaday's banner for Art in the Park.
0 Pruned branches away from signs in the WN area of Kalispell.
0 Thermoplastic cross -walk on Conway Drive and around Elrod School.
0 Made "No Parking" signs for the fair ground area, delivered barricades and signs for fair
parking. Installed the "No Parking" signs around the fair area.
0 Boarded up doors and windows on the City owned Keno Inn.
0 Completed thermoplastic on crosswalks at El Rod School, 5th Avenue West, and at Vs
Avenue East & 9th Street East.
0 Repaired "Stop" sign and pole as result of an accident at 5th Avenue WN & West Montana.
0 Barricaded and signed around the fairgrounds for the Fair.
0 Signed and barricaded for the Fair Parade.
0 Provided services for the convoy on Saturday, August 251h, for the Kalameth Falls Oregon
Relief truck rally.
TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISON continued...
0 Thermoplastic cross -walks at Peterson School (4), Meridian Road (3), Hedges School (2), 1st
Avenue West in the 600 block (2), Downtown area (4), Woodland and 2"a Street (2), and
Linderman School (1).
0 Provided 16.5 hours of support to MDT for sign and signal repairs in NW Montana at the
following locations: Hwy 93 South & 18th Street, Hwy 2 East & Sager Lane, Idaho & 71h
Avenue EN, Idaho & Meridian, Mountain Mall & Hwy 93 North in Whitefish, and Meridian
& Hwy 93 North.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIVISION
132 Work orders were completed during the month of August.
582 Lab tests were performed during the month of August.
24 Loads of sludge were hauled during August.
103,067 pounds of bio-solids were pressed.
July Discharge Permit Report: No violations. Total flow for the month: 79 million gallons;
average daily flow: 2.6 million gallons.
