(Please feel free to provide the make and model of any aircraft you fly in and out of KCA) Open -Ended Response • Cessna 182 • I do not use Kalispell city airport, not because the poor facillities but the poor decision of the pilots who fly out of there! • T-CRAFT, C-172, C-182, PA-18, J-3. The reason that Kalispell Airport is valuable is location, location, location - as the aerial photo I have included shows. • Cessna 185 Piper PA20 We need this airport. It's a shame to compare our KCA to the growth in Polson. • Relocation of runways/extension is very important for safety. You can have hash marks/displaced thresholds will used control of length. Also voluntary noise ABA is what many pilots airport like LVC (Livermore California does) • Kalispell City is a good stopping place for fuel and meal. FBO is very friendly and helpful. • 1 fly a 1967 Cessna 172. If we can be "Good Neighbors" to the city sewer plant, we are already in the right place. If larger planes are to use the a/p on a regular basis, then some of my adequates become marginal and paving is even more important! • Bonanza BE-35. Proximity to downtown is huge plus. On rare occasions when courtesy car or taxi is unavailable, it's a 20-25 min walk. While I appreciate you getting the contract to do this study - how about adding postage to your return envelope. It will get you a higher response rate! and better info. • Cessna 175 • 1 own an office building near the airport and it is important for their business when customers fly in. • I also fly for Red Eagle and New Frontier single engine turbines we have done work for the Fish Wildlife and Parks, Forest Service, DNRC. The city airport is very important to our operations. I have been employed at the city airport for over 35 years. • Need a place to wash airplane. Highest gas prices in the area. Poor lighting around the wind sock. • PA2BR-200- A courtesy car would increase the utility of S27 enormously! If the radio towers would go away, that would be a tremendous safety improvement. • Cessna 172 #N1692F • AK: 172G Notes: The radio towers need to go! Never should have been erected at their present location in the first place. Seems to be a very vocal minority that do not like the airport. Actually, low-lying land makes most of the current airport quite expensive to utilize in another mode. • Those that oppose the airport, all moved into their houses knowing the airport was there. they are very vocal, but I think they are definitely in the minority. The airport is a definite asset for the city. • Cessna 172H • Paved tie downs on the Rosauer's side so we don't have to carry groceries across the runway. • Lots of folks park by Rosauers just to watch aircraft. A restaurant or parking area would be good to provide for the public to enjoy the airport environment. • Piper PA28-235 Removing the radio towers in the most important issue. The airport is important to the City of Kalispell and the businesses. • Red Eagle is the only fuel at the airport. They have too many aircraft parked too close to the fuel island making it difficult to maneuver airplanes to the fuel pump. • 1963 Cessna 150. 1959 Cessna 175. When I go to Kalispell I always fly into City. Almost never go to GPI • Cessna 172, Skyote Biplane (experimental) • The location of the airport is unique. Proximity to city businesses and residents. Important time/fuel savings for both based aircraft and visitors. • Cessna Skylane (182) Radio towers south end of S27 are a hazard! • Like the closeness of hotel. Walk to, great. Keep an eye on AC from certain rooms. +++ • The Kalispell City Airport is very important to Montana General Aviation and the City of Kalispell. I would like to see it stay the same as far as type of use. The improvements are needed to insure that we don't lose the airport. I live 1 block west of the airport and have for 23 years. I have never been bothered by aircraft noise. Sincerely, Dick Brady w-406- 471-5209 h-406-752-8024. • The Kalispell City Airport (S27) provides an excellent service to our local pilots, community and to visitors. The city council should approve the realignment and improvements immediately. We have studied and debated it long enough. Just do it! • 1 would really like to see some form of automated weather observation system installed .... AWDS?! Also, more hangers and hangering opportunities. I have the utmost regard for the Red Eagle FBO!! • This airport could use a much more innovative manager; make it a fun place to come to. Plan fly ins, barbecues, events. I don't know if he is even a pilot. Be nice to have an instrument approach available. • S31 is a needed facility. For the most part it is adequate for the amount of traffic it gets. As people are flying less due to aging pilots and cost of flying, the airport should be fine with minor improvements to taxiways and aprons. I fly a 7DC Champ in for fuel on occasion. • CE-182-RG Turn S27 into a real airport or close it!! • Size and Cost of Hangar Lease Areas - not applicable to me. Need to have a selection box for those kinds of responses. • Fly a BEU407 out of the hospital in Kalispell. KCA is a great place to train. My only complaint is the "Quiet Skies Coalition" which complains about the noise. • As President of the EAA 102 we hold free rides for kids program called Young Eagles. Red Eagle is the perfect place to hold this event. Improvement of their apron and taxiways would make this event safer. I support any and all improvements to the Kalispell City Airport. In one day we will fly up to 45 kids using 4 aircraft. www.EAA102.org (Young Eagles) ■ 1 have not operated at city airport for 10 years or so. The runway is not adequate for twin operation (C-340 and C-310.) There are no hangers available for this size aircraft. The precision opm rach at GPI is very important. • 1 feel this runway needs to be longer and wider for safety reasons. Especially taking into account the altitude and humidity during hot weather. Just don't see how a few "Mal Contents" can derail this improvement. • When I fly XC I look for RON locations similar to 527. • Cessna 182 • Grass Runway? • Cessna 182 H • Kalispell City Airport is a jewel for the city if it is developed properly. I.E. = small businesses along it's periphery and or industrial park and quite obviously it is a great place to base an air craft and to land at to visit Kalispell. ■ 1 fly either a C182 or a Cherokee Arrow into Kalispell City. Mainly because it is closer to the City Center where I do business and shopping. ■ One of the most convenient airports in Montana. Not adequate for jets. • Cessna 182 • Whether or not any major improvements are completed at KCA, it is an invaluable resource that needs to be kept available and in operation. • RV8 (homebuilt); as a retired professional pilot i find the facilities and services well cared for and and assistance readily available and affordable. It also focuses on the small GA community which is not the case at KGPI. Attentive service and adequate facilities make it a valuable business asset for the Flathead Valley. • cessna 180, cessna ,72. PA 18A. I like best: excellent alternate airport, good fuel stop and great people and nice courtesy car at Red Eagle Aviation. • If a pilot wants more services he goes to GPI. Leave the airport "as is", we can not justify spending taxpayers money on upgrading and we do not need to increase traffic volume and size given the approaches over the city. • 1. Map is of GPI - not S27. 2. You should survey pilots from a far - they are more likely to use S27 than adjacent pilots. Perhaps a user survey as well to gather user data from out of area. • Keep the airport open!! Close to town business, food and lodging. It is an excellent facility for instructing student pilots. Student pilots (the first 20 hours) are a bit shy of larger airports and need a less used - (away from airlines) to get familiar with flying. • 1 feel that KCA should remain as it is, an asset to the community. The airport manager should be friendlier to the flying community. • AWOS much needed • The radio towers have to go. This airport is in a great location, having it so close to town is a direct benefit to the business and pilot. • It's a great resouce that should be promoted for continued use. Great airport, great location. ■ It is OK the way it is. Thanks. ■ I don't understand that in question #16 that you want responses to all facilities. I don't have opinions regarding all facilities. • 1 have grown up around the Kalispell City Airport. I learned to fly there, have flown for pleasure there, flown as an instructor, flown commercially, mowed the grass, swept hangers, fueled aircraft, made friends, and enjoyed every minute of it. I think it has great potential but I feel a few things could be improved. Biggest thing is the towers to the south must be torn down. I also think that with a bit larger runway and an approach it could be used as a great alternate airport for corporate and pleasure fliers which could allow people to access Flathead Lake. Thanks! ■ 1. Prefer to arrive using rwy 31 and depart using rwy 13 due to city infrastructure to the N and NW of the airport; 2. Radio towers to the SE are a definite hazard in low visibility or if a pilot is unfamiliar with the area. Long straight -in approaches to rwy 31 are potentially hazardous to a pilot unfamiliar with the location of the towers; 3. To make the airport truly useful an IAP (GPS) approach(s) needs to be available; 4. If the airport had an IAP, a published obstacle departure procedure (ODP) could be available which would be a tremendous safety asset to pilots during IFR or MVFR departures from the airport; 5. The "run-up" areas at the departure end of 13 and 31 are inadequate. Run-up areas really don't exist; 6. The location of S27 is a tremendous asset to the GA community. Much more convenient to city businesses/services than GPI. The businesses/services in the airport area benefit from both local and transient pilots using S27; 7. Winds from the west can create difficult crosswind landing scenarios. A re -alignment of the runway could reduce the affect of these crosswinds. • 1 own a Cessna 172M. I took my first year of flight instruction at 527. 1 live in Libby so most flights are to GPI, but once in a while I land at S27. Because of an ankle injury I couldn't fly for 16 months. After using runways at other airports, S27 feels uncomfortably narrow and short. I was unhappy to see Rosauer's Gro & other businesses build just east of the runway. I'm concerned as to what affect these buildings have on wind currents around the airport. Ground access to/from S27 needs improved. It's like driving through a cow pasture to the FBO. Martha G. Hendrickson, 915CM • 1 fly a Cessna 182 for personal use. Kalispell City airport is handy because of it's proximity to restaurants and business's. It's also a handy fuel stop for me. Personally I would like to see it stay pretty much the same as it is now so faster biz jets would continue to use FCA. • HELICOPTER PILOTS LIKE ME DO NOT NEED LENGTH OR WIDTH. NO FACTOR IN SURVEY... • DO NOT FLY MUCH DUE TO ECONOMY NOW... • An airport "jewel" for Montana pilots. Does not need a lot of improvements --just maintain what is there. One of the few airports in Montana where a pilot can land, stay overnight, and walk to motel and dining facilities, or camp out. I fly a Cessna 170E and have been in and out of City Airport many times, just not much in 2010. 1 can see that if one is flying a higher performance aircraft, some improvements would be desirable. Thanks for the chance to participate in this survey. • C 182 • 1 was hangared there for years. I am hangaredat KGPI for the past 10 years or so. • C206, C182,C172, C170, C140, C150, RV6 I believe the City Airport is an asset to the city of Kalispell. It's location is very convient for light aircraft pilots and passengers who want to stop for shopping or meals and lodging. It is invaluable as a relief airport for Glacier International and it's ease of use makes it the primary for the light single or twin engine general aviation aircraft. GPI's remote location from Kalispell and the recreation facilities around Flathead Lake definately make it the number two airport in their valley. I believe that were the airport be closed that it would be a detriment to the community in many ways. • Need KCA when fog puts GPI below min. Cessna 340 and Cessna182. Fuel prices • I fly a Cessna206, a Beechcraft Baron, a 269 Cbi Helicopter, a Blanik Glider, a Cessna 182 in and out of Kalispell City Airport. I respectfully request that this airport be expanded, realigned, widen, better lights installed, GPS precision approach installed, obsticals removed and security fence installed, etc. In order for safer flights into and out of this airport a minimum of things such as named above need to be done. Thank you. • Piper PA22 • The primary factor that would increase my use would be the availability of a rental car on site. As is, this results in my use of GPI most of the time. • Cessna 172 Citabria 7GCBC • Kalispell city is a great asset to the city and with some upgrades it would be even better. A wider runway is definitely needed, re -orientation would be beneficial to approaches, and some type of VASI would be very helpful for night and day approaches. Taxiways are too narrow. Removal of the radio towers on the South end of the field should be a priority, they are a hazard that is intolerable, especially if approaching the field at night or under marginal weather conditions. ■ I am unable to respond to this survey in any meaningful way because of its poor design. Specifically, Question #1 Asks: Have you used the Kalispell City Airport in the past year? Although I have used the Kalispell City Airport in the past, I have not done so within the last year. Therefore none of the three possible answers applies to me, and any choice I make among them would be inaccurate. In other words, for me, the possible answers given are all non -responsive to the question. Since all of the other questions flow from the answer given to the first question which I cannot answer, then they too become non- responsive or irrelevant. Perhaps changing the first question and its possible answers would elicit more reliable information for your survey, because as it stands persons such as myself are left to guess at which answer best describes us. Just a suggestion. S27 is one of my favorite airports, mostly in part to the super friendly people at red eagle. The airport manager is a pain to transient aircraft. 1979 Cessna 172. 1 am a pilot who lives in the city of Kalispell. I also am a CPA with 43 years of business experience in Kalispell. The city airport is an important economic factor in the mix of promoting business in the Kalispell area. I travel all over the U.S. and I'm always amazed at the number of people (pilots and non pilots) that respond when you say that you live in Kalispell MT. The response is isn't that the city that has that neat airport right at the edge of town? It is perceived as a progressive feature to have that type of facility available. What better use of land that is adjacent to the sewer plant and provides open area and green space for the southern approach to the city. • TWO EXPERIMENTAL airplanes, KR-1, N1380P, RV-6, N3585 . City airport is a flight safety factor when low ceilings/ fog envelope parts of the valley when I'm flying out of the local area. Fuel prices have been very reasonable at the FBOs and although I'm based at KGPI, I'll occasionally stop by for fuel before going out of the valley. I would probably base there if the runway/taxiways,and hangars were better. • Aeronca Champ 7AC. Although I have sold my Cessna 185 taildragger as of July, 2010, and released my rented hangar to other renters, I will return to general aviation somewhere in the valley in a new to me airplane. The helicopter operations on the narrow taxiways is a serious hazard for wind gusts and obnoxious associated hazards. Therefore, when I do return to airplane ownership, it will not be at Kalispell city unless the helicopter propwash is eliminated both on taxiways and in the proximity of the fueling areas. Piper PA23-250 Aztec. The airport needs the radio towers removed and and the runway lengthened for added safety. It also needs a GPS precision appraoch and a better approach lighting system for IFR operations. ■ Mooney and C-152
