Subject: Council Approval to Submit a 1997 Continuum of Care Grant Application on
behalf of Samaritan House
Please have the City Council authorize the submission of a $300,000 Supportive Housing
Program grant application at their next session. This authorization may be done by a simple vote
of the council and does not necessarily require a resolution. If funded, the dollars will be
utilized to help Samaritan House create 14 units of transitional housing on the second floor of the
new concourse building they plan to construct as well as cover'/Z the acquisition costs of the
eight units directly across the street to the east.
Transitional housing is the next step for the homeless after immediate shelter care. While in
transitional housing, case managers from the many service providers in the community will be
working with the individuals and/or families to enhance their job employment skills, their basic
literacy needs, etc. so they can eventually obtain and hold permanent housing out on the open
market.
