Construction was started on 33 single family homes. The construction was scattered all over the jurisdiction; North Belmar, Ashley Park, Glacier Village Greens, Gateway Orchard Villas, Fairway Boulevard, Greenbriar and in Evergreen. Buffalo Stage has now started to develop. Commercial activity was light with permits issued for a new 16,000 s.f retail building on Lasalle Road near Reserve Drive and on a Cenex convenience store, gas station car wash and bulk plant on Lasalle Road across from K-Mart. Flathead Industries pulled permits for 11 dwelling units. A seven-plex and 4 other dwelling units have started construction. Zoning: There were no variance requests heard for the month of April. There were two sign permits issued in April. One was for 6 signs at Equity Supply and the other was for one sign at Budget Rent-A-Car on Idaho. Personnel: Dwain completed his Navy Reserve Annual Training and returned to work. The work was scattered throughout the jurisdiction. The Buffalo Stage subdivision by the new Edgerton School on Whitefish Stage Road has started to develop. Subdivisions being created south of Kelly Road, near South Meadows and by the Kalispell Christian Center should provide lots for continued residential growth. In the commercial arena, Semitool started construction on a 21,000 square foot manufacturing building in the LaSalle Industrial Park in Evergreen. The mini -storage facility behind Buttrey Foods increased its size with the addition of a new storage building. The dance studio, across from the city shops, has started an addition to their building and J.C. Penney has started an interior remodel of their store in the Kalispell Center Mall. Zoning: The Board of Adjustment heard two variance requests at their June meeting. Both variance requests were denied. The first request was from Samuel Leighty. Mr. Leighty constructed a carport and a storage addition within the required side yard setback, and with these additions, he exceeded the maximum lot coverage allowed. Mr. Leighty did all of this work without building permits. The next variance request was from Carver Engineering who was representing the Lloyd Dahl Testamentary Trust. Their variance request was to reduce the required 10' side yard setback to 5' on S undeveloped lots in Knolls Addition. Nonclassified 0 There was a total of 45 fire runs, two of which were, "General Alarms", ( a fire large enough to call in all off -duty firefighters) . The estimated fire loss for the second quarter was $16,000.00. The first "General Alarm" was at 537 5th Avenue West where a youth had a candle in his bedroom causing a room and contents to burn. The fire had estimated damages of $7,500.00. The second "General Alarm" was at 340 Harrison Blvd where an exterior deck was found to be burning. The "All -Personnel" call was initiated at the time of the 911 call which was reported as "the whole back of the house is on fire". The fire department ambulances made 465 runs for the second quarter of 1996 with total miles traveled of 4970. This quarter there were 126 ambulance runs that were non - transport. Also this quarter there were 8 transports of two or more patients. Medical Emergencies Sick Calls Psychiatric Problems •� a. ' • • -2- Fire Department Firefighters/ Emts were involved in fire and emergency medical training this month covering such topics as: Fire Cause Determination ,' Ambulance Critique I The eight paramedics are now fully licensed and operational and our ambulance is responding as an Advanced Life Support Unit nearly all of the time. Safety and Fire Prevention activities occurring during the second quarter of 1996 were as follows : 383 commercial building inspections, safety presentations to all city senior apartment complexes with complimentary blood pressure checks, 4 public CPR classes, CPR to the police department, 453 students and 62 adults had station tours and handouts, puppet shows were given at 2 of the schools and 14 people checked out brushes to clean out their chimneys.
