03. Historical SocietyThe Kalispell Historical Society has undertaken a mission to preserve Kalispell Central
School as a Flathead Valley museum to involve and include all of the cities of the valley.
Among the initial efforts will be the creation of window panels for the school building,
depicting the opening of the school in 1884. We are recruiting art students from Big Fork,
Whitefish, Columbia Falls and Kalispell, including Flathead Valley Community College, to assist
in this project. The student artists will be selected by the supervising art instructor of each
school.
Panels will be painted with figures of men, women and children wearing clothing of the
styles of 1884. The paintings will be edged in one half -inch black markers, cartoon like, so that
they can be seen from street level. The theme will portray the school's opening reception; as
viewed by passers-by from the sidewalks. Pictures of styles from the 1890 to 1895 will be
available for inspiration, or students may do their own fashion research and create original
designs.
Five interested art students will be chosen from each school by their supervising
instructor. Each student will be responsible for one window. Students will be given name credit
on the windows and we will try for newspaper and T.V. coverage. Painting of the panels will
be supervised by Howard Jacobson, New York clothing designer, and his daughter, Jessica.
The initial meeting of the student artists will be Saturday, April 22. We will advise you
of the meeting place well in advance of that date. The panels will be painted and installed by
May 12th.

We sincerely hope that you will greet this project with lots of enthusiasm as we work
