A. OFFICE, REPORTS, BUDGETS. REQUESTS & COMPLAINTS.
-Compiling information on service line maintenance for FY 94.

B. SUPERVISION PERSONNEL & SAFETY.
-Hired Lois Wisher for PW Secretary position.
-Hired one labor contractor for alley clean up (temporary).
-Safety meeting held on Drivers Safety Training.
-Attended Mueller Hydrant Maintenance Workshop.

-143 repair orders were completed during the month of May.

ENGINEERING
A. DESIGN, SURVEY, ESTIMATES, RFP, INSPECTION, & PROJECTS.
-6th Ave. W.N./Railroad St. and Sykes III project bid awarded to Pack & Co.
-Continue to monitor construction on the South Meadows utility and street project.
-Conducted two PTI Communications project reviews.
-Continue to run level loops for GIS.
-Surveyed and staked curb grades for 18th St. E. from 3rd to 5th.
-Continue public right-of-way inspections.
-Preparation of Dept. of Natural Resources Grant and Loan application complete.
-Referenced intersection monuments as appropriate.
-Inspecting water main extension on Glacier View Drive.
A. DESIGN SURVEY ESTIMATES RFP INSPECTION & PROJECTS. (cont)
-Continue to prepare designs for intersections. Removing culverts and replacing with valleys
to improve drainage prior to overlay.
-Surveyed for new radii on Highway 93 S. and 18th St. E. for new traffic light project.
-Completed Cadd drawings for Utah Street water main project and 4th St. W. storm drain
project.
-Designed and surveyed 680 feet of storm drain on 4th St. W.
Completed design and surveying for installation of storm drain and new curb radius' on 5th St.
W. and 6th Ave. W.
-Revised and updated sidewalk and curbing contract.
-Set grades for KCFW curbing and sidewalk.
-Prepared First Ave. W.N. design concept - Sunset to Wyoming.
OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE
A. WATER PUMPING STORAGE DISTRIBUTION. (Ben Van Dyke)
-Continued maintenance of all pumps, motors, reservoirs, grounds and controls for the water
supply system.
-Produced 86,565,000 gallons of water, 19,170,000 gallons in the upper zone and 67,395,000
gallons in the lower zone.
-Injected 80 pounds of chlorine at Lawrence Park pump station.
-Conducted tour of pump stations for students from Russell School.
-Assisted contracted crew with inspecting interior of elevated water tank.
B. SEWER FACILITIES LIFT STATIONS COLLECTION. ( Vic Schroeder)
-Weekly general maintenance continues at fourteen lift stations.
-Video and jet cleaning operations continue.
-Jet cleaned for NHD - Hwy 93 culvert.
-Cleaning leaves from storm inlets.
-Pumped septic tanks at Lawrence Park and Daley Ball Field.
-Installed 320' of 8" storm line and four catch basins at 6th Ave. W. and 5th St. W.
-Installed sewer service line to Heritage Park.
-Raised manholes for overlay project.
-Installed four sewer taps on 18th St. E.
-Installed 640' of 8" storm line at 4th St. W. - Meridian to loth Ave. Alley.
-New jet truck arrived on May 5, 1994. The crew underwent intensive training for two days.
-Responded to three sewer main blockages.
C. WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT. (Joanne Emrick)
-Gravity (Fermenter) Thickener repairs to sweeper arms and bottom scrapers completed; unit put
back on line. Better control of solids in Plant was immediately evident as the solids hauled to Olney
went from 287 tons in April to 195 tons in May.
-Drained down 18 month old north secondary clarifier and found corroded and broken bolts, wheels
off, slipped U bolts, rubbed electrical wire, and destroyed bottom scraper sections. Cost to weld,
replace bolts with stainless steel, and other miscellaneous repairs were $1300, not including Operator
labor.
-Drained down south secondary clarifier and found the same problems as above but not as severe;
cost of rebuild was $650.
-Conducted 4 school tours of Plant.
-Laboratory autoanalyzer data handler unit and digestion unit not functioning properly. The data
handler circuit board had to be replaced and since the equipment is past the year warranty period, the
cost was $1800. The problem with the digestion unit has not yet been solved; this unit has only been
used several dozen times.
-Presently working to find a different solution for draining condensation from the MUA in the
Headworks Building; experiencing problems with the drain area.
-Changes have been made in the Gas Room that allow the burning of methane gas produced in the
Plant; this should help lower the natural gas bill.
-Incomplete work orders for April, and May have been done. Also, other misc. maintenance projects
such as cleaning the ultraviolet lights and reaeration basin, mowing lawns and maintaining the
grounds, repairing the sludge pump, etc. have been done.
-Equipment has been ordered and bids let for various projects to complete the WWTP construction.
Also, used equipment is being gathered for the City auction.
-The Plant was without power for 14 hours and 25 minutes due to a lightning strike on May 15th,
which broke apart the main power line coming into the Plant. This strike did an estimated $3000 in
damage to equipment (computer, PLC, coils, etc.). As a result of the power outage, the fecal
coliform count was violated for that week.
-An Electrical Engineer has been hired to make recommendations for equipment and changes to try to
minimize the power outage problems. On May 31st the Plant again had two power outages.
D. SOLID WASTE COLLECTIONIDISPOSAL (Jack Fournier)
ALLEY CLEAN UP.
-Weekly garbage service continues.
-Alley clean up continues.
-Responded to ten solid waste violations.
-Repaired four 90 gallon containers.
-Delivered fifteen 90 gallon containers to new customers and one 400 gallon container to the Post
Office.
-Continue to assemble ROTO 100 gallon containers and Heil 300 gallon containers.
CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE
A. STREETS CURBS GUTTERS ALLEYS.

-Street sweeping and flushing ongoing.
-Grading and dust coating alleys.
-Prepped alleys for paving.
-Continue to patch and pick up loose chunks of asphalt due to Spring breakup.
-Assisted sewer division with storm pipe installation on 5th St. W.
-Assisted parks division with limb and branch clean up after wind storm.
-Prepped and paved utility cut outs.
-Prepped and pre -leveled 5th Ave. W.N. - Idaho to Washington.
-Pre-leveled W. Arizona St.
-Crack Sealed 9th Ave. W. between Center and 2nd St. W. and lst St. W. between 7th Ave. and
west of 9th Ave. to alley.
-Prepped streets for overlay project.
-Backfilled driveway and boulevard on 9th Ave. W. after overlay.
-Received two Elgin sweepers from Montana Highway Department.
-Attended classes on new Elgin sweepers.
-Placed jersey rails on triangle corner of 3 Mile Drive and Meridian to prevent cut -through.
-Reconstructed 18th St. E. and west of Hwy 93 radius and shoulder for widening before overlay
and new signal lights.
-Provided assistance with surveying by engineering division.
-Assisted solid waste division with holiday route.
-Hauled alley clean up debris to landfill.
-Hauled sweeping debris to fill site.
B. WATER CONSTRUCTION AND SYSTEM REPAIR. (Randy Vickhammer)
-Work order and complaint resolution continues.
-Tagged delinquent accounts.
-Meter repair and replacement ongoing.
-Replaced three fire hydrants.
-Repaired five valves.
-Replaced three valve boxes.
-Replaced curb valve in Depot Park.
-Replaced three curb boxes.
-Repaired water main on 6th St. W. between 8th Ave. W. & 9th Ave. W.
-Installed two 8" x 1" water taps on 18th St. E.
-Installed a new 3/4" service line to Shepards Glass.
-Installed two-way radio in Ford dump truck.
C. SIGNALS SIGNS STRIPING SERVICES. (Jerry Diegel)
-Continued general maintenance on traffic signals, signs, meters, decorative lights, alley lights,
special lighting, airport runway lights, barricading, banners and sight obstructions.
-Hired contractor to install banners.
-Moving poles and resigning for Parking Commission.
-Posting temporary no parking signs for overlay project.
-Installed four new loops on north side of 5th Ave. W.N. & Idaho for traffic light.
-Painting crosswalks.
-Finished striping streets.
-Assisted MDOT with signal turn ons.
-Spotted 5th Ave. W.N. on north side for three lanes (new design).
-Spotted 3rd St. W. from lst Ave. W. to 3rd Alley W. (recent overlay).
-Spotted 2nd Ave. W. from 2nd St. W. to 4th St. W. (recent overlay).

Kalispell Fire Department Monthly Report

City Council Members
The Kalispell Fire Department responded to 12 fire calls for the
month of May 1994.None of the fire calls was a "General Alarm," a
fire large enough to call in all off -duty firefighters.
The ambulances made 132 runs for the month of May 1994.

The firefighters inspected 106 commercial buildings during the
month of May 1994. The fire marshal is workings on 15 different
inspections and re -inspections at this time.
The fire marshal and firefighter Terry Eaton gave a fire
extinguisher demonstration to 33 personnel from the Montana Fish
and Game.
Firefighter's Dan Pearce and Kevin Hadley gave a fire prevention
talk and a fie extinguisher demonstration to 50 students at the
City Airport. All of the students used a fire extinguisher to put
out a controlled fire.
Our department flowed, lubricated and checked 79 fire hydrants
during May 1994.

There were ten groups of students that toured the Kalispell Fire
Department with a total of 229 students and 35 adults that
participated.
There were five people who used the Kalispell Fire Department
Chimney Brush Program during May 1994.
