07-15-87 Parks Comm MinutesPARKS COP94ITTEE MEETING JULY 15, 1987 • The committee met in the Council Chambers at 7:30 A.M. Present were Chairman Manning, Committee members Robinson and Nystul, DPF7 Hammer, Dennis Carver of Carver Engineering, Nick Haren, Chamber of Commerce and Parks Director Drent. New Griffin Park Dennis Carver presented a chart showing the cost incurred in Phase I and six options for Phase II (included). He explained the options and a lengthy discussion followed. This concentrated mostly on what pressing needs should be first addressed and Hanauer stressed the need for good lighting. Councilman Robinson had to leave the meeting at this point but indicated that her preference would be for Option #3, with some modifications, Mayor Kennedy joined the meeting in the meantime. After further discussions, the remaining committee members opted for Option M, with Carver making some adjustments to stay within budget. RestroomsAi.ons Park Nick Haren discussed the deplorable condition of the restrooms in Lions Park and the lack of maintenance. Parks Director Drent pointed out that under the current lease, the responsibility to maintain the restrooms is that of the Chamber of Commerce. He also mentioned that the Chamber was to furnish new fixtures, which never materialized. The Parks crew has cleaned the restrooms twice weekly and has kept the area around the building trumped, although it is not their responsibility. Haren was under the impression Isthat the lease had expired and pointed out the difficulty of asking volunteers to clean restrooms. The Parks Committee took the matter under advisement to be further discussed at the expiration of the lease. Reservation -System Woodland Park Parks Director Drent expressed his dissatisfaction with the way reservatiioons were made. Reservations were always accepted and made by phone, with no problems. Currently, the secretary wants people to come in and sign in person --which is an inconvenience with the danger that people will no longer make reservations. Mayor Kennedy pointed out that the parks rules ask for signing. Drent pointed out that this rule has been on the books for years and is used if needed regarding questionable reservations. The committee agreed with the Park Director's use of this particular rule and parks reservations. Retirement of the Parks Director With his approaching retirement, Drent asked that someone be involved in some of his duties as contact with several organizations which are engaged in various projects. Under the circumstances, Drent does not feel that he can commit the City to anything. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 A.M. Pieter M.
