4:10 P. M. MONDAY CONF'E ENCE ROOM NOVEMBER 5, 1984
Present: Mayor McDowell; Councilmen Springer, Palmer, Nystul, Ruiz, Grainger,
Schindler, Saverud and Manning; DPW Hammer and Park Supt. Drent.
SUBJECT: Ballparks
Chairman Springer asked DPW Hammer and Park Supt. Drent to display a drawing of
a proposed baseball park complex and soccer field. The area is a 20 acre tract
south on Airport Road in South Meadows Addition. The complex would include an
American Legion Ballfield and two Babe Ruth fields. Jerry Begg, owner, would
donate the 20 acres in exchange for construction of a street, water and sewer
service and a bridge over Ashley Creek. Estimated cost for this would be
$170,000.00 - not figuring in construction of the complex.
There is a problem between Mr. Begg and the property owner to the south and we
cannot be guaranteed access from that direction.
Councilman Nystul suggested that Hammer and Drent prepare an in-house proposal for
Mr. Begg, and so moved. Seconded by Councilman Manning.
Councilman Ruiz suggested that we should make a formal inquiry for another location
before deciding. Drent replied that he would really like to see the 20 acre tract
• in a location where there is an opportunity to expand to about 40 acres.
Discussion on Forest Products land, meeting with the County Park Department, getting
an appraisal for the present Griffin Park, and looking for other locations.
DPW Hammer stated that if we go ahead and get the property, he is confident there
will be much volunteer work done on the complex.
r
The committee agreed that they should proceed with negotiations with Mr. Begg and
obtain a confidential memo for the Council on the appraisal of Griffin Park and
prepare figures for acquisition.
Motion carried.
Chairman Springer stated that the swim pool and Lawrence Park would be discussed
at the 4:00 P. M. meeting on the 7th.
City Development Gallagher stated that there is a good chance for the sale of
Griffin Park.
Councilman Manning stated that Carver Engineering wants direction from the Council
on the pool. Tomorrow is election day, and if the pool bond issue passes he would
like Council permission for power to act.
Meeting adjourned at 4:50 P. M.
