Disposition of Doughboy Monument -
Mr. Fred Metcalf, Mrs. Ida Pedersen, D. B. Wishart, Mr. Mather, and others represent-
ing World War I, American Legion, Women' Auxiliary organisations and other war
veterans related to the City Council their reasons for desiring the relocation of
the doughboy monument to the Soldiers Hone Grounds at Columbia Falls. The Council
was informed by the veterans' representatives that a suitable foundation for the
monument has already been prepared on the Soldiers Home grounds.
Councilman Daley asked that the veterans reconsider their request to move the
monument from Kalispell. Councilman Daley informed the group that the monument
would be seen and appreciated by more people at the new location by the Courthouse,
and that the monument should be located in the County Seat. The location in front
of the Courthouse would be an outstanding place; would be an inspiration of
patriotism; a symbol of Americanism and would be seen and appreciated by more
people at the Courthouse location.
Mayor Bjorneby also urged the groups to reconsider and leave the monument in
Kalispell.
Councilman Miron moved the City of Kalispell permit the relocation of the doughboy
monument to the Soldiers home in Columbia Falls, Montana. Seconded by Councilman
Happ. Two councilmen voted for - two voted against - two abstained.
Councilman Miron requested a recess for the purpose of conferring with Councilman
Rogers. Mayor Bjorneby declared a 10 minute recess. Mayor Bjorneby reconvened
time council at 5:42 P. M. and discussion on the motion reopened.
Councilman Rogers reported that he felt that World War II veterans were indifferent
to the placement of the monument - young people are not concerned about the monument -
that in deference to the World War I veterans, he would vote for the motion.
Three councilmen voted for - two against - one abstained. Motion carried.
