Consultant Meeting Date: January 10, 2000 Telephone 406-758-7764 Fax 406-758-7758 Background: The Insurance Services Office, (ISO) is an independent organization funded by user fees from the property and casualty insurers that use those services. Over 99% of the insurance companies use some or all of the services offered by ISO. Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) is the principal provider of insurance underwriting, rating and statistical information to the property/casualty insurance industry in the United States. One of the key information elements that insurers use in the underwriting and rating process for property insurance policies is ISO's Public Protection Information, which qualifies a community's fire suppression resources. Information regarding the fire department, water supply, fire alarm system and boundries are critical to insurers providing insurance coverage to the citizens of your community. It is not the intent of ISO to provide a guide for life safety or loss prevention purposes. Purchases, manpower and standard operating procedures are a local decision determined by local conditions. Any effort to improve a community's ISO Rating will require a long term effort and planning. The Fire Suppression Rating Schedule should not be used as a guide for day-to-day fire department operations. It's important to remember that ISO has no regulatory authority. ISO simply surveys the property and reports to the insurer who has requested the underwriting information. -2- Emergency Services Consulting Group has contracted with the City of Kalispell for a pre ISO evaluation. Mr. Joe Lynch will be here for the Monday night workshop to arrange for visitation dates and to discuss the project in greater detail. Recommendation: None at this time.
