SUBJECT: Streetscape Project Update aim -Request for
MEETING DATE: September 10, 2001
BACKGROUND: Please refer to previous data packages provided to you and plan to bring that
information with you. Doug Widmayer will provide an update of the streetscape design report
that has been hammered out with MDT. Although they decline to endorse or otherwise give a
formal approval of the approach, ostensibly to avoid taking a side in this local matter, we are
advised that neither will they oppose the project, for the same reason. The review should not take
a great deal of time because the vast majority of information continues unchanged from that
which you have seen repeatedly in the past. Except for the reduction of improvements on Main
Street and elimination of center medians on First Avenues East and West, the project is
essentially the same as originally proposed over a year ago. Doug will go over this again to
refresh memories and explain the cost estimates. We will ask for your guidance on how to
proceed. We are prepared to quickly proceed with design, beginning with the consultant
selection RFP. Time is short for all this to occur, and we must be mindful of the delays that will
occur when dealing with MDT. Nonetheless, we believe there is ample time to prepare an
excellent project.
ACTION REQUESTED: Provide direction to staff to either develop a project design or to
abandon the effort.
