REPORT TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Fred Zavodny, Public Works Project Manager
SUBJECT: Demolition of City Owned Buildings
MEETING DATE: October 22, 2001
BACKGROUND: The Kalispell City Council has previously indicated their support for the demolition
of the former Al -Anon Building located at 420 First Avenue East and the former Parking Commission
Building located at 424 First Avenue East. These buildings have been prepared for demolition. The
asbestos ceiling tiles have been removed from the Parking Commission Building and the underground
storage tank was removed from the area between the buildings. All public and private utilities are
disconnected. The buildings are now ready for demolition.
The cost to demolish the buildings and haul the debris to the Flathead County Landfill is
estimated to be $15,000.00. The landfill cost is estimated to be $11,000.00. The demolition costs will be
paid directly to the contractor and the landfill costs will be paid directly to the landfill. Funds are
available for this work within the Downtown Urban Renewal District budget.
City Council concurrence is requested in order to advertise for bids to demolish the buildings.
When the site was purchased two years ago it was anticipated that it would be developed for City
Hall office space or parking. Once demolition is completed the site is currently anticipated to be
developed for parking.
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize staff to proceed with demolition of the buildings.
FISCAL EFFECTS: Expenditure of approximately $26,000 in Urban Renewal District funds.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Council
