REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Michael Baker, Director Parks and Recreation
SUBJECT: Old Bruckhauser Pool
MEETING DATE: December 8' , 2003
BACKGROUND:
Over the past year our department has received many ideas, potential schemes and input from the
public regarding the old Bruckhauser pool site.
As you are aware from past council meetings and work strops, our initial plan for the pool was to
demo and fill in the pool, leaving some of the surrounding deck in place to support the bathhouse
building as patio area for any future utilization of the building. Plans included landscaping the
old pool area with sod, trees, flowers and benches. A fountain would be created out of the
existing wading pool. We propose building a pavilion at the south end of the old pool site to
accommodate approximately 30 people. We did not envision a large pavilion as we hope to
create a tranquil relaxing atmosphere, more in keeping with the existing flower gardens, lagoon
and current uses in the surrounding area. Parking and traffic concerns have been taken into
consideration when looking at future uses and we would like to see some past issues and
concerns mitigated.
Our initial proposal was to explore the possibility of an in-house force account renovation of the
existing bathhouse to be utilized as our temporary recreation day camp facilities and offices.
Currently our day camp program is being run out of the parks maintenance shop at Woodland
Park, not a perfect or ideal spot. Eventually other alternatives such as the Armory or Community
Center might open up, at which time we would move our programs and camps accordingly.
The Woodland Park Master Plan is in the final stages of completion and will be presented to
council in the first part of the New Year for review and comment. At that time specifies and
details of the plan will be evaluated and discussed.
RECOMMENDATION:
Proceed with in house force account renovation of the pool bathhouse and demolition of the pool
and prepping of site to accommodate landscaping.
FINANCE:
Expect to have potential dollars available through contingency of pool construction account,
which can legally be used for demolition of Bruckhauser pool and renovation of bathhouse.
ALTERNATIVES:
Respectfully submitted,
As suggested by Council.
