Community Spirit MonumentMarch 7, 2006 e; The Community Spirit Monument Dear Mayor and City Council Members, We are presenting a proposal at the March , 2006 Council workshop for a Community Spirit Monument to be constructed in woodland Park. We approached tie City Council with this project last August and were asked to bring the proposal back to a future meeting. The mo ume t.'s dcsigu is a four -pillar gazebo -like structure that will take the place of are aging gazebo that is scheduled to be torn down by the Parks Department. Attached is a architect's plan for the monument and a map shoes its location i Woodland Park. focal landscape architect, Bruce Goody, created a landscape plan for the monument. He conveyed his opira'on that the proposed location. In Woodland Park was an ideal spot for the monument. t. The design is for a structure with a concrete base, tile pillars and a forest green metal roof that will blend well with other structures lr Woodland Park and be virtually maintenance free. We envision this Community Spirit Monument as an enjoyable gathering spot for various activities in the park; Kay Lam, a local sculpture, offered art sessions that allowed commumty residents to create ceramic tiles depicting therres of the surrounding landscape, peace, hope, and community values. over 700 tiles have been created and will cover the pillars of the monument. Hundreds of people from all walks of life attended the workshops t contributed tiles. Also, Kay coordinated with various groups that wanted to create tiles including; the Girl Scouts, Kalispell High School art classes, Edgerton School, Cayuse Prairie School, Kila Elementary School, the Kalispell Soro tomists, Kalispell Youth Outreach, the United Church of Cyst, the Pathways progr-am, Citizens for a Better Flathead, The Manor, Kalispell Yoga Center, the Glacier Unitafian Universalist Fellowship, the Gemini program and Big Brothers and Sisters. The plan is to construct the monument through donations of labor and material. The concept for the monument grew from a desire to create a symbol of our appreciation for this beautiful valley and the people who live here. The project began about free years ago and arose out of a group called Joining Hands A air t Hate, Kay Lynn has spent many hours helping several hundred people create tiles that reflect their own artwork and message. Often monuments are constructed to remember and honor what has been lost.
