REPORT TO. Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: James H. Patrick, City Manager
SUBJECT: Consolidated E-911 Communications Center
MEETING DATE: January 22, 2007
BACKGROUND: Currently the County dispatch center dispatches Fire and Ambulance for
all departments in the County as well as the County Sheriff. The three Cities have dispatch
centers to dispatch their individual police departments. All departments have suffered from an
over utilized, under resourced, antiquated system at the County. The County E911
Administrative Board has made some headway by working with the County to hire a consultant
who reviewed the current operations and made recommendations to improve the system. Part of
the recommendations included hiring an E911 executive director, increasing training, improving
protocols, relocating to a larger facility, and consolidating cities' and the County
communications centers into one center. The County has hired an E911 executive director who
continues to work on developing updated protocols and improve the quality and quantity of
training for all dispatchers county wide. The County E911 Administrative Board has
recommended that the County and Cities begin the process of consolidating dispatch centers with
the goal of July first as the switch over date.
Council passed a resolution of intent to move toward the consolidated center. I will discuss the
on going process and negotiations at the Council work session.
Respectfully submitted,
