E/6. Appointments to the Conrad Mansion Board of Directors4D City of Kalispell Post Office Box 1997 - Kalispell, Montana 59903-1997 - Telephone (406)758-7700 Fax(406)758-7758 Memo To: City Council Members From: Wm. E. Boharski, Mayor Subject: Board Appointments Date: March 2, 2001 On March 5 there are three boards that have appointments that need to be addressed. The following are my recommendations and the reasons for those recommendations. If you have any concerns regarding these, please bring them to the Council and remember that even if you disagree with these, please make your objections known in a charitable fashion and I'm sure the majority of the Council will reach an acceptable resolution. Conrad Mansion Board - There is one opening on the Conrad Mansion Board. We advertised for applicants and received four letters of interest. My recommendation to the Council is to reappoint Norb Donahue for another term. Because of the number of qualified applicants for this board, this decision is somewhat difficult. Before making my recommendation, I consulted with Sam Bibler, President of the Board, who indicated that Norbert's legal experience is extremely valuable to the board, especially at this point in time. It was indicated to me that Norbert is able to offer background and legal advice to the Board at no cost to the organization. He also has plenty of time to commit to this activity. Kalispell Parking Commission - There is one opening on the Kalispell Parking Commission. We advertised for applicants and received three letters of interest. My recommendation to the City Council is to appoint Leisa Baldwin. She is a small business owner on Main Street and, if you will recall, was highly recommended during the last round of appointments when Mr. Goodman was added to the Commission. City Council Members Page 2 March 2, 2001 Street Tree Commission - There are two openings on the Street Tree Commission. We advertised for applicants. Two individuals applied. They are: Neil Deering and Steve Perrone. My recommendation is that we reappoint these two individuals to the Street Tree Commission. They have experience and are the only ones at this point in time that expressed an interest in serving in this capacity. City board posts need applicant Ipt)o/ The city of Kalispell is seeking applicants for an opening on the Parking Commission and two open- ings on the Street Tree Com- mission. The two Street Tree Com- mission positions also are four-year terms, starting immediately. The commission deter- mines city needs in tree planting, maintenance and removal. Box 1997 Kalispell, MT 59963-1997 Dear Mayor Boharski: On January 1, 2001 my appointment to the Conrad Mansion Board of Directors will terminate. Accordingly, I am hereby applying for reappointment for another four year term beginning on that date. My qualifications are as follows: I was closely involved with the circumstances of the creation of the Mansion as a facility of the City and the negotiations with Mrs. Alicia Conrad Campbell. As City Attorney at the time, I was one of those individuals sued by a group of citizens led by Dale Williams who tried to stop the City's accepting the property. Fortunately we prevailed in that lawsuit. My original appointment followed the death of the late James Murphy, Attorney, who was represented by Mrs. Campbell in the negotiations. Over the years I have, served on the Mansion board, on many occasions I have furnished input stemming. ,from my long-term association with the facility andviewedBoard decisions from my legal perspective. I, will appreciate your reappointment for another term on•the Board: es Octfully u tte rbert F, Donahue Architects r//2 Design Group NO. 1 SUNSET PLAZA KALISPELL, MONTANA PHONE NO. 406-257-7125 FAX NO. 406-756-3409 e-mail adg@digisys.net January 11, 2001 Mayor Bill Boharski P.O. I am a licensed Architect and I have an interest in history, especially with respect to architecture. I have had a particular interest in Victorian architecture, and have recently completed the construction of my new Victorian home west of town. I have visited the Conrad Mansion a number of times. The Mansion is a fine example of late 19th century architecture and a valuable asset to the community. Sincerely, Michael J. I live in the neighborhood of the Conrad Mansion, and have tremendous pride in the building, the gardens, the history, and the philosophy of its preservation and use. Shortly after moving into our home, many years ago, I stood out on the sidewalk with my children and watched a crane lift Alicia Conrad Campbell's pink trailer over the stone wall —closing one chapter and beginning another. In 1989, Mrs. Redfield asked me to be a tour guide, and I enjoyed three wonderful years working there. Local history has been a hobby of mine, and at the Conrad Mansion the rich history feels alive. I also love public speaking, and dealing with groups of people. Several times, during the off season, I gave presentations to the children at Elrod School about the Conrad Mansion and the members of the Conrad family. Even after leaving my employment there, to go on to full time work, I have still taken groups through the home — summer visitors, Japanese students, Montana League of Cities visitors. A golden moment for me though, was when I brought an Italian friend on a tour. I acknowledged that Italian bistory, goes back h,.:ndreds, if not thousands, of years, and the Conrad Mansion Museum history illustrates some of the developments in our nation. state, industry, and this valley in the last hundred years or so. He understood and said, yes, that is your immediate history. How sad that in Italy, so much of the recent history wasn't preserved because of rile emphasis on the ancient, and so much has been - lost. Here, at the Conrad Mansion Museum, you have preserved the history of a dramatically changing time in your country, and the world. He crystallized the significance. ' I worked on the Kalispell Historical Survey, under the inspiration of Kathy McKay, furthering my knowledge and love of local history. I'know, and am known by, the majority of the board members and the Mansion director, and have a great respect for their purpose and objectives and successes. I feel like i could fit nicely on the board. My husband and I owned RauthCs Art -IN' Frame Shop for 23 years, so I also have a keen appreciation of the business side of the Conrad Mansion Museum Board. Thank you, for your consideration.
