Dear Chris,
Effective December 31, 2001 Senior Sergeant Dan Bourne has elected to retire after nearly
22 years of service with the Kalispell Police Department. Dan started with the department on March
31, 1980.
When Dan came to the department in 1980 he had already served with the Ronan Police
Department, completed his bachelor's degree from the University of Montana and served with the
United States Army in Vietnam.
Dan began here as a patrolman and soon proved that he had a significant knowledge of
firearms and marksmanship. Dan has been the senior firearms instructor for the department for
several years and he had been one of our primary hostage and crisis negotiators.
Senior Sergeant Bourne's file is filled with letters of recognition, thanks and commendation
including the meritorious service medal for his work in attempting to save a drowning victim. He
was promoted to Sergeant in 1992 and he was named the Senior Sergeant in May of 2000. Dan has
served as a critical incident debriefing specialist and he has long been a recognized instructor and
court expert on use of force and firearms issues.
A recent commendation Senior Sergeant Bourne received from the patrol lieutenant shows
the measure of Dan's commitment to his profession. The lieutenant commended Senior Sergeant
Bourne for saving the life a distraught women attempting suicide. Dan was able to locate the missing
woman who was known to be suicidal through diligent investigation and then forced his way into her
garage when he learned she was attempting to asphyxiate herself. He rescued her from the car and
later was required to chase her down to keep her from hurting herself further.
For the past 22 years Dan Bourne has served this city with devotion, courage, aptitude,
character and poise. He deserves our thanks and appreciation for a job well done. I want to wish Dan
and his family the best,(in his upcoming retirement.
