Mower, Assistant Fire Chief SUBJECT: Excellence Awards, Community Service Award and Appreciation Award MEETING DATE: April 16, 2001 BACKGROUND: Excellence Awards: On January 16th, Toby Hubbard, Kirk Pederson and Terry Gormley responded to a 911 call concerning a pregnant woman from Missoula. Because of their training as paramedics, Hubbard, Pederson and Gormley were able to diagnose and evaluate the patient, realizing that she was going to need an emergency operation. Because of their prompt action and notification to the hospital, medical staff were prepared upon the ambulance's arrival. Please read the attached letter from Doctor Van Kirke Nelson, Citizenship Award: In June of 2000, a car safety seat check clinic was started by the Kalispell Fire Department, the City Health Department, the Summit and the State Transportation Board. Kirk Pederson volunteered to be the Fire Department's representative and attended several days of training in Helena. Pederson has been instrumental in establishing this community service that allows parents to bring their child's car seat to the Fire Department once a month to make sure it is properly fitted to the child. Approximately 450 of these checks have been made. Achievement Award: Tim Soule has worked hard over the past year writing grants for specialty equipment. He has succeeded in obtaining for the Fire Department three pieces of equipment, the most important being a Thermal Imager. It is extremely valuable in fire assessment at the scene, the location of trap victims and in determining where the hottest part of the fire is located. Because of Soule's efforts, the Kalispell Fire Department is better prepared to handle emergencies. RECOMMENDATION: The City Council recognize Toby Hubbard, Kirk Pederson, Terry Gormley and Tim Soule for their outstanding efforts. FISCAL EFFECTS: None ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the Council.
