BACKGROUND: This year the Northwest Drug Task Force, Kalispell and Flathead
County received HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) designation from the
Federal Government. That designation resulted in an annual award of nearly
$200,000.00 (two hundred thousand dollars) to the task force for expenses related to
investigating drug trafficking. Although grant funds cannot be used for new officer base
salaries some of the funds can be used for overtime.
In the past the department has budgeted $10,000.00 for drug related overtime. Our
HIDTA program will devote approximately $9,600.00 towards overtime related to drug
investigations for the Kalispell Police Department. General fund monies in our budget,
previously designated towards drug related overtime can be used to accommodate other
needs. In accepting this award there will be no reporting requirements and no match
money is required.
RECOMMENDATIONS: The department recommends the Council accept grant
money from the HIDTA project designated for drug interdiction overtime.
FISCAL EFFECTS: As described.
ALTERNATIVES: As recommended by council.
