5. Council Recognition - Montana Police Officer of the Year Award - Officer Brett CorbettREPORT:
The Kalispell
Honorable Mayor and City Council
Department
FROM: Frank Garner, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Officer Of The Year Award
MEETING DATE: August 5, 2002
BACKGROUND: On July 19, 2002 Officer Brett Corbett of the Kalispell Police Department was
named "Police Officer of the Year" for Montana by the Montana Association of Chief s of Police at their
annual convention in Great Falls.
The Montana Association of Chief s of Police annually solicits nominations for "Officer of the Year"
from police departments across the state. MACOP represents police executives from most major
municipal police agencies in Montanan. The "Officer of the Year" candidates are selected based on the
attitude they display toward the public and fellow employees, their appearance and respect for the
uniform, their work ethic and community service.
The selection committee specifically noted Officer Corbett's work in establishing a women's self-defense
class. The course includes instruction in the use of pepper spray and provides prevention tips from
domestic violence advocates on how to avoid dangerous situations.
Dozens of women from high school students to grandmothers have received these valuable life-saving
skills. Brett also identified a funding source to help provide this training without burdening the already
strained financial resources of the department.
Officer Corbett not only conceptualized the program he brought it to life through his determination and
hard work.
The letter of nomination noted that Officer Corbett is an exemplary officer who always demonstrates a
positive attitude and who consistently challenges himself to excel. Brett is a tremendous role model with
outstanding character who exhibits all of the good qualities we promote in members of our profession.
RECOMMENDATIONS: The department recommends the council acknowledge Officer Corbett's
