Kukulski, City Manauer SUBJECT: Monthly Activity Report for FROM: James Hansz, Public Works DATE: September 15, 2003 Highlights of monthly activity for the operating divisions of the Public Works Department for the month of August 2003 are as follows: ENGINEERING DIVISION • Met with Community Development to review merits of utility extensions for potential CD project in the vicinity of Sylvan Drive. • Continued development of the WWTP preliminary engineering report to expand the plant capacity with submittal of draft to MDEQ scheduled for September. • Continued review of system development charge data presented to City Council and prepared final recommendations for implementation. • Completed major construction of Streetscape Project. Minor punch list items and small change orders to modify lighting, add back in parking lot at Mountain Valley Foods, and delay completion permanent striping until spring are still to be done. • Continued support of utility engineering coordination process for Highway 93 and Meridian Road projects. • Continued coordination of the 50/50 Sidewalk Program with interested property owners. • Continued work with MDEQ to realign City water rights in accordance with recommendations made in the Facility Plan. • Continued engineering to install additional emergency electrical generator at Armory well and Noffsinger Spring. • Continued work with consultant performing design for U.S. 93 and Grandview Drive sewage pumping station reconstruction. • Completed Jr. High School section of Three Mile Drive Water Main project and added work to close a loop on East Washington Street. Off-street work on Three Mile is still in progress. • Synergy Builders of Elliston, Montana began installation of Sewer/Street Maintenance Building at City maintenance yard. • Continued engineering analysis of WWTP digester roof to identify procedure for reducing gas leakage and reduce odors. ENGINEERING DIVISION continued... • Monitored Schwarz Engineering effort to correct elevation discontinuity with the Glacier Meadows subdivision extension of Buffalo Stage sewer system. • Continued technical discussions with engineers representing developers of several subdivisions on Three Mile Drive. Identified water line upgrade requirements. Encouraged developers to partner on utility construction. • Continued field surveys for utility updates including Hospital complex, Sunnyside, 9th St. W. storm drain, Russell School storm drain, Penco and Burton's. • Responded to miscellaneous survey requests. • Continued to work with Horizon's on mapping details. OFFICE AND STAFF There were 12 emergency call -outs for the month of August: ■ Water Division — 2 ■ Sewer Division — 6 ■ TSS Division — 1 ■ Street Division - 1 ■ WWTP - 2 ■ Total —12 CENTRAL GARAGE 109 repair orders were completed during the month of August: ■ Police — 14 Streets — 35 ■ Fire — 13 ■ Garbage - 13 Others — 34 ■ Total —109 • Continued regular maintenance of City vehicles and machinery. • Installed trailer wiring connector and repaired signals on Street's pickup. • Replaced water pump and welded screen on Elgin sweeper. • Replaced deck drive belt on Park's mower. • Repaired broken spring on brakes of Street tandem. • Replaced water pump and fuel filter on ambulance. • Repaired power converter wiring on ambulance. • Repaired and reinforce a bent fork for Parks Dept. • Adjusted grabbers and straightened Packer plate bracket on Garbage truck. • Replaced broken fuel tank mounting strap on Street Department water truck. • Held weekly safety meetings. SANITARY/STORM SEWER DIVISON • Continued video and jet cleaning of sewer lines Monday through Thursday. • Performed weekly maintenance of sixteen lift stations each Friday. • Held weekly safety meetings. SOLID WASTE DIVISION • Delivered 8 containers to new customers: 0-90 gallon, 3 -100 gallon, 0 -400 gallon, 5 -300 gallon. • Repaired 8 containers; 4 — 90 gallon, 2 — 300 gallon, 2 — 400 gallon and responded to 8 violations. • Continued weekly garbage service and alley cleanup. • Continued pruning in City alleys. • Marty Tweet continued training as Operator. • Held weekly safety meetings. STREET DIVISION • General operations and maintenance of City streets and alleys. • Various cold -mix patching on City streets and alleys. • Sweeping of City streets ongoing. • Removed speed bumps South of Kelly Road. • Repaired various manholes. • Prepped alleys for paving. • Prepped and patched for various water service leaks. • Held weekly safety meetings. WATER DIVISION WATER PRODUCTION & STORAGE: • Produced 215 M gallons of water: 59 M gallons upper zone and 156 M gallons lower zone. • Injected 809 gallons of sodium hypochlorite, 12% solution to maintain an average chlorine residual of 0.29 PPM throughout the system. • Continued daily monitoring of all pump stations and routine maintenance on all pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, analyzers, grounds, buildings, controls, testing, water sampling, and record keeping. • Conducted TOC, SOC, VOC, THMM, and HAA.5" tests on all wells and spring. • Received shipment of 811 gallons sodium hypochlorite. • Worked on cooling fan at Buffalo Hill Well. • Replaced o-rings on check valve for #1 pump at Buffalo Booster Station. • Repaired numerous chlorine leaks and cleaned all injectors at pump stations. • Worked on auto controls for Buffalo Well and Grandview Well — SCADA malfunctioning. WATER CONSTRUCTION AND SYSTEM REPAIR: • Tagged 80 delinquent accounts on the West Side of Kalispell. • Completed 158 work orders during the month August. • Continue to work on meter replacement and breaking down old meters. • Continue to fill fire hydrants. • Repaired water main break at 6`h Avenue East & 6`h Street East. • Ran 540' — 4" water main at sports complex. • Completed 4" water main for Parks Department. • Repaired curb box at 117 Greenbriar Drive. • Held weekly safety meetings. TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISON • Continued regular maintenance of signals, signs, luminaires, barricades, sight obstructions, Airport lighting, alley lighting. • Continue to work on Thermoplastic of sidewalks. • Built paint machine platform for new GMC pickup. • Repainted Trippet's parking lot to accommodate Streetscape changes. • Replaced one-way sign and pole damaged in motor vehicle accident. • Installed "Do Not Enter" and "One -Way" signs for 5`h Avenue EN alley. • Placed traffic counters at 71h Avenue East and 9`h Street East. • Delivered signs and barricades for block party on W. Arizona on 8/22/03, picked up 8/25/03. • Installed new pole, breakaway, and "Stop" sign at 2„d Street East and 5`h Avenue East. • Installed (2) new "Stop" signs and street name signs at 7`h Avenue West and Sunnyside Drive and 6`h Avenue West and Sunnyside Drive. Installed (1) street name sign for 51h Avenue West and Sunnyside and (2) "Children Playing" signs on Mountain View Lane. • Made street location signs for water department well locations at various locations. • Weekly safety meetings held. WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIVISION • 148 Work orders were completed during the month of August. • 455 Lab tests were performed during the month of August. • 21 Loads of sludge were hauled during August. • 97,820 pounds of bio-solids were pressed. • Permit Report for July 2003. There were no permit violations.
