Kalispell City Code Section 22-6 is more restrictive than state law requiring applicants to be a minimum of 21 years of age. The police department has received inquiries from college students graduating with an associates degree who are 20 years of age but ineligible to apply under Section 22-6. The Police department views these applicants as qualified and recommends a change in Section 22-6 to make them eligible for consideration. RECOMMENDATIONS: The department recommends the council amend Kalispell City Code Section 22-6 to reduce the minimum age of a police officer candidate to 20 years of age. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KALISPELL, MONTANA, • • SECTION I. Section 22-6 (A) of the Kalispell City Code shall be and is hereby amended to read as follows: A. Specified: The members of the Police Department on the active list of the City at the time of their appointment under this Chapter shall not be less than twenty (20) years of age or more than forty (40) years of age. SECTION II. This Ordinance shall be effective thirty (30) days from and after the date of its final passage and approval. Specified: The members of the Police Department on the active list of the City at the time of their appointment under this Chapter shall not be less than twenty one (2 1) years of age nor more than forty (40) years of age, but this restriction shall not apply to any member of the present Police Department, nor to police reserves hereinafter provided for, nor to honorably discharged soldiers, sailors and marines of the United States who were in the late war with Germany and her allies.
