REPORT: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: Roger Nasset, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Acceptance of Donation from Don Abbey
MEETING DATE: November 5, 2007
BACKGROUND: over the past few years Mr. Donald Abbey has graciously donated
monies to the Kalispell Police Department to assist our Special Response Team (SRT) in
areas where our equipment has been outdated or insufficient. In 2005 Mr. Abbey donated
monies to purchase new ballistic vests for every member of the team.
During the past summer Mr. Abbey had the opportunity to observe our tactical team train
and to spear with them about their needs and necessities. Mr. Abbey, who has a
background in Special Forces, recognized two areas in which our equipment needed
improvement and replacement.
The first was a safe tactical response vehicle. In August of this year Mr. Abbey donated
monies for us to purchase a top notch tactical response vehicle which will not only allow
us to keep officers safer but will give us a much needed tool to better protect the public.
The second area of concern was that our SRT snipers were operating with equipment
which had been purchased at the inception. of the team in 1994. The tactical equipment
has served its purpose but from much use it is overdue for replacement. Mr. Abbey has
graciously donated $37,292.56 to purchase new rifles, optics, and ammunition.
RECOMMENDATIONS: The City of Kalispell should recognize the donation of
$371,292.56 from. Mr. Don Abbey.
FISCAL EFFECTS: Lessen the burden to future budgets for replacing these items.
Respectfully submitted,
