SUBJECT: Preserve America Communities Designation 2008 Community
Application
MEETING DATE: February 19, 2008
BACKGROUND: Preserve America is a White House initiative developed in cooperation
with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the U.S. Departments of Interior,
Commerce, Agriculture, and Housing and Urban Development. It highlights the efforts of the
President and Mrs. Bush to preserve our national heritage. It has several components, one of
which is the designation of Preserve America Communities.
Communities may apply for special honorary designation as a Preserve America Community,
which recognizes communities that: Protect and celebrate their heritage; use their historic assets
for economic development and community revitalization; and encourage people to experience
and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
Benefits of designation include, White House recognition; a certificate of recognition; a Preserve
America Community road sign; eligibility for Preserve America grants; authorization to use the
Preserve America logo on signs, flags, banners, and promotional materials; listing in a Web -
based Preserve America Community directory; national and regional press releases; and
enhanced community visibility and pride.
Preserve America grants support planning, development, and implementation of innovative
activities and programs in heritage tourism such as; surveying and documenting historic
resources; interpreting historic sites; planning; marketing, and training. Successful applicants
will emphasize creative projects that promote and preserve the community's cultural resources.
Successful projects will involve public -private partnerships and serve as models to communities
nationwide for heritage tourism, education, and economic development.
Preserve America grant funding will not be used for repair; rehabilitation; or acquisition of
historic properties, sites; or collections; conservation of collections; long-term maintenance or
curatorial work; reconstructing former historic properties; moving historic properties or
construction of new buildings.
Preserve America Communities Designation 2008 Community Application is at the request of
the Hockaday Museum of Art.
RECOMMENDATION: Council authorize the Mayor to sign the Preserve America
Communities Program 2008 Application.

RESOLUTION NO.5266
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO APPLY FOR THE "PRESERVE
AMERICA COMMUNITIES PROGRAM 2008" ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF
KALISPELL.
WHEREAS, Preserve America is a White House initiative developed in cooperation with the
Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U.S. Department of the Interior,
and the U.S. Department of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, the goals of this initiative include a greater shared knowledge about our Nation's
past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation
in preserving the country's irreplaceable cultural and natural heritage assets, and
support for the economic vitality of communities; and
WHEREAS, this initiative is compatible with our community's interests and goals related to
historic preservation; and
WHEREAS, designation as a Preserve America Community will improve our community's
ability to protect and promote its historical resources.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
KALISPELL AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION L The City of Kalispell will apply for the designation of the City of
Kalispell as a Preserve America Community.
SECTION II. The City of Kalispell will protect and celebrate our heritage, use our
historic assets for economic development and community revitalization,
and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic
resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
