The Kalispell Fire Department responded to twenty-six fire calls
for the month of May. The fire loss was approximately
$10,900.00. There was one general alarm fire. The fire was
started in the attic area of the Gateway West mall, by a young
boy playing with matches. The fire caused approximately
$10,000.00 in damages.

Administration Highlights - Michael Baker &
Donna Worth:
• Summer Brochure printed and distributed;
• Plant SIX memorial trees in Lawrence Park;
• Repair Bruckhauser Pool;
• Plant annuals in flower gardens;
• Assemble new gazebo at Woodland Park (Eagle Scout Project).
ISTEA: Preliminary proposal approved by MDT for Woodland Park DREAM
Phase III. Design for Phase II North Main/Lawrence Park
approved by MDT, Bridge Design underway (relocated site for
river crossing). Meridian Road Walkway - scale down approved
by MDT, waiting for construction notice. Work on right-of-way
easements.
Youth Athletic Complex: Contract awarded to LHC, Inc. Construction
started, and is ahead of schedule.
Greenbriar Park: Park -in -Lieu development with automatic irrigation
installed and meter pits completed. Turf seed has germinated.
Organize homeowner tree planting.

W Parks Department - Ken Bauska, Foreman:
Maintenance Tasks:
• rock rake and spread grass seed at Greenbriar Park; place
stone around Woodland Park Lagoon; clean Woodland Creek
outlet; mow and weedwhip Hockaday, Woodland, Lawrence,
Ponderosa, Buffalo Hill; place picnic tables at various spots
around town; plant trees and landscape Lawrence Park; repair
and clean boiler at pool; haul benches to various places in
downtown area; daily rest room cleaning and garbage removal.
Seasonal Maintenance:
• spray various park sites and game fields with herbiscides;
repair and start various irrigation systems; catch siglets for
bird specialist.
Urban Forestry - Michael Baker, Urban Forester:
• tree pruning and removals - various sites;
• meet with Pacific Power & Light to discuss City boulevard tree
pruning;
Recreation Depart. - C. Bohannan & J. Reese,
Recreation Coordinators:
• April showers bring forth May flowers. Not this year. It was
April sunshine instead. We stopped skiing and started hiking
with the senior group. They also enjoyed a history slide show
and walk learning about our City's heritage. Finished up
Little Dribblers Basketball, Start Smart, and Indoor Soccer.
Lots of folks enjoying the free Tennis lessons in May.
• Frequent Monthly Duties: Vouchers, Marketing, Administrative
work, answering phones, assisting participants, taking

ENGINEERING DIVISION
• Arranged a tour of City Public Works operations on May 281h for Mr. Jose Lopez who was visiting
the area as part of a Rotary exchange program.
• Conducted a Solid Waste Study project review.
• Continued support of Kalispell City/County Master Plan update.
• Attended MDOT review meeting for Main / Idaho intersection project.
• Continued support of Kalispell Carbon Monoxide Technical Advisory Committee.
• Provided Chamber TAC with update of paving program.
• Hosted a pre -con meeting for the First Ave. E. / Center Street signal project.
• Hosted pre -bid meeting for the 1st Alley East Project.
• Prepared plans and specifications for the Downtown Tax Increment Sidewalk Project.
• Completed City map with estimated City area and calculated standard error for County GIS maps
related to section corners for the City Surveyor.
• Reviewed County Landfill charges on City property resulting in no charges to City.
• Continued inspection of Willows Subdivision
• Inspected contractor installed water and sewer mains along Parkway Drive and Four -Mile Drive
at the City ball field complex.
• Completed roto-milling for street overlay project. Milled 1-1 / 2" along curb and gutters and key
ways.
• Street overlay project is 50% complete.
• Initiated storm drain design on 6th Street East to remove a catch basin currently draining to
sanitary sewer.
• Completed project list for 1998/99 overlay and chipseal program.
• FVCC student intern completed utility locations at end of Spring semester.
• Completed numerous R/ W and fence line location requests.
• Completed Northridge Park encroachment drawing for the Parks Department.
• Researched, field searched, located and set five intersection monument riser boxes.
• Initiated design survey for traffic light at 1st Avenue East and 3rd Street East.
• Completed Downtown Tax Increment Sidewalk Project.
• Completed annual sidewalk and curbing bid.
OFFICE AND STAFF
• There were 14 emergency call -outs for the month of May: Water Division - 3;
TSS Division - 5; WWTP — 3; Street Division — 1; and Sewer Division 2.
CENTRAL GARAGE
• 104 repair orders were completed during the month of May:

SANITARY/STORM SEWER DIVISION
• Continued video and jet cleaning of sewer lines Monday through Thursday.
• Performed weekly maintenance of fifteen lift stations each Friday.
• Jet cleaned grease lines.
• Tested auxiliary power plant on lift stations.
• Jet cleaned and ran camera in sewer mains on East Montana.
• Repaired storm drain manhole at City Airport.
• Replaced three metal rings and lid on overlay project on 4th Avenue EN.
• Filled utility pole block outs with concrete on 1 s' Avenue East.
• Pumped storm water from around Outlaw Inn with the auxiliary pump.
• Demonstrated jet cleaning and TV inspection for Mr. Lopez who was visiting here from Mexico
touring our facilities on May 28th as part of a Rotary sponsored exchange program.
SOLID WASTE DIVISION
• Delivered 14 containers to new customers.
• Repaired 6 containers and responded to 7 violations.
• Continued weekly garbage service.
• Continued weekly alley cleanup.
• Escorted visitors from Mexico on a trip through the Solid Waste Division operations on May
28th.
STREET DIVISION
• Continued alley grading and street sweeping.
• Continued alley clean-up.
• Watered and dust coated alleys.
• Sprayed weeds.
• Completed repair of utility cuts at various locations.
• Lawrence Park:
• Cleaned up water area for seeding.
• Ground up tree stumps.
• Initiated repair of utility cuts prior to chip sealing projects.
• Swept overlay projects after completion.
WATER DIVISION
WATER PUMPING & STORAGE-
• Produced 103 M gallons of water: 23 M gallons upper zone and 80 M gallons lower zone.
• Continued routine maintenance on all pumps, motors, grounds, buildings, controls, testing and
record keeping.
• Resolved problems at well sites with telemetry and metering quantities.
• Put Grandview wells on telemetry — automated control.
• Conducted inspection of ground storage reservoirs.
• Flow tested various fire hydrants.
WATER CONSTRUCTION AND SYSTEM REPAIR. -
Tagged 43 delinquent accounts.
• Delivered 22 water meters.
• Completed 81 work orders during the month of May.
• Repaired 2 fire hydrants.

• Repaired sinkholes and valves at 696 & 851 North Main.
• Installed an extension on fire hydrant at 81h Avenue EN and 6th Street EN.
TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISION
• Continued maintenance of traffic signals, lights, signs, and meters.
• Completed traffic counts on West Wyoming Street.
• Fabricated and installed four loops for the south side of the intersection at Idaho &
Meridian.
• Fabricated breakaways and installed poles and street signs in Lone Pine Estates and East
Meridian Road
• Doing traffic count at 5th Avenue WN and West Wyoming.
• Installed Museum Signs at the Conrad Mansion.
• Installed "Stop Ahead" signs at West Wyoming and 5th Avenue WN.
• Furnished signs & barricades for the 3 on 3 Basketball Hoops Contest on 1st Avenue East
between Market Place and Center Street.
• Closed and signed 3rd Avenue East between 14th Street East and 181h Street East because of
standing water, 8-10" deep.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIVISION
• 86 Work Orders were completed during the month of May.
• 409 Lab Tests were performed during the month of May.
• 19 Loads of sludge were hauled during May.
• Joni Emrick was the local chairperson of the Montana Section American Water Works
Association/Water Environment Association Joint Conference held at the Outlaw Inn May 6-8.
One Hundred -fifty operators, engineers, public works directors, and State personnel attended.
Cm. Gary Nystul provided the "Welcome to Kalispell" presentation. Operator Curt Konecky
attended the conference and Operator John Overcast was the official photographer.
• We received an inquiry on the Plant from Belgium. We have had inquiries from all over the
world — Mexico, Australia, Canada, etc.
• In April the total Plant flow was 48.9 million gallons; average daily flow was 1.6 million gallons.
Total suspended solids averaged 3 ppm; total phosphorus averaged 0.15 ppm.
• The Plant Manager conducted five tours, four with school classes and one with a visiting
Engineer from Mexico here with a Rotary sponsored exchange program.
• The Plant Manager attended the Flathead Basin Commission meeting. A Department of
Environmental Quality representative gave a status report on waste water plants in the Flathead
Valley. He complimented the Kalispell Plant on its excellent effluent quality.
• Heavy rain on May 26th produced a 4.3 million gallon flow through the Plant.
