CITATION

During the late evening of October 16th, 1997, seventeen year old Zachary Dickson and his companion
Jacob Cranney were returning to Zachary's pickup truck after watching a movie at the Gateway Cinema.
At the truck young Jacob began experiencing severe breathing problems. He grabbed his inhaler and then
passed out unconscious in the truck.
Zachary tried to revive his friend but his efforts were unsuccessful. Zachary instantly realized that his
friend had stopped breathing and there wasn't time for him to return to the theater to summon help in a
conventional manner. Although fearing for his friend's life, young Zachary remained clear headed. He
considered his options and quickly drove his friend to the emergency room by the quickest and most prudent
means under the existing conditions.
Upon arrival at the hospital emergency room, Zachary sprinted inside to summon help. Jacob was still
unconscious and his skin was turning blue. The emergency room physician, Dr. Laura, quickly placed a
breathing tube in his friend's throat and gave him medication to relax his chest and throat so that he could
breath.
Dr. Laura stated that "If Zachary had not taken the action he did his companion would not have lived -
that he would not have lasted two more minutes."
Zachary Dickson's clear thinking and his quick and decisive action resulted in saving his friend's life.
His actions reflect great credit upon himself, his family, and are in keeping with the highest tradition of
citizen service. Zachary's leadership and courage set a personal example for us all.
