Box 2293 9(alispell, jt2 S9903 March 30, 1999 Mr. Al Thelan Kalispell City Manager Kalispell, MT 59903 Dear Mr. Thelan, I am writing this letter to you for several reasons. First of all, on behalf of the Northwest Montana Historical Society, let me thank you and the Kalispell City Council for the forthcoming paving of the parking lot on the north side of the Central School building. This will be a wonderful and greatly appreciated improvement. Second, with regard to the design of this lot, we have heard that there are plans to have an island or two for landscaping purposes. We would like to request that you consider deleting such islands from the plans. • Each island probably takes up three to four parking spaces. • In just the few months that we have been there, we have experienced the concern of always having to back up while looking to make sure that we don't back into the existing island. • From the appearance of the present island, with a missing tie and other signs of deterioration, it is obvious that the island has probably caused some experiences of fender damage. • The island shows considerable deterioration and unsightliness. Islands such as these normally look good for just the first couple of years or until the first fender ding occurs. • The islands unquestionably add to the cost, and we must always try to be concerned about the taxpayers' outlay. • I'm sure that your Public Works Department will concur that this type of island presents additional difficulty and expense with regard to snow removal, sweeping, and maintenance. Our last concern will be the striping and allocation of parking on the new lot. We have assumed that this might be the best time, with the paving soon to take place and with the museum's use to go into high gear (our first major exhibit begins on April 15), for us to now make a request for consideration of signage to help with museum parking. We would greatly appreciate it if the front row (next to the Museum) of this north parking lot could be reserved for "Museum Parking." Also, we would greatly appreciate it if the 2nd Avenue East yellow permit signs could now be replaced by "Museum Parking" signs. Thank you very much for these considerations. And, again, many thanks to all of you and to the citizens of Kalispell for this marvelous inclusion for the future of our area. Just since the first of February we have had over 1,200 people go through the building for Open House viewing. Our first major exhibit begins on April 15 and, within two weeks, the Community Room will be all set for ensemble concerts, speakers, film and slide showings, receptions, recitals, meetings, etc. This facility is fast becoming Uptown Kalispell's first-class museum and cultural center.
