• All ISTEA trails aswept and being used actively by the
public.
• prepare for Trees -to -Paper -to -Trees and Arbor Day;
• Energize all park restrooms;
Parks Department - Ken Bauska, Foreman:
Maintenance Tasks:
• attend Hunter Sprinkler seminar in Missoula; prune and stack
brush in various park locations; rake leaves; gather trash
from the parks; haul benches and picnic tables to parks; haul
paper for upcoming paper drive; sweep Lawrence Park trail; put
deck on John Deere, leafer on Kabota; attend pruning seminar;
attend safety meeting; build bird pen for new swans; daily
rest room and pavilion cleaning and garbage removal.
Seasonal Maintenance:
• last of snow removal at City Hall;
• irrigation startup - KYAC;
• edge fields at KYAC;
• thatch fields at KYAC;
• place benches & screens at Kalispell Tennis Courts;

Highlights of monthly activity for the operating divisions of the Public Works
Department for the month of March 2000 are as follows:
ENGINEERING DIVISION
■ Reviewed with TD&H preliminary layouts for utilities related to State Lands Section 36
Neighborhood Plan.
■ Reviewed status of Meridian Road ROW work with consultant, RPA.
■ Continued to work with Eagle Transit to develop a potential co-op project for bus and
equipment storage. Informed of a potential problem resulting from a grant fund reduction.
■ Reviewed with MDT maintenance changes in annual road stripping program and level of
signal maintenance support provided by the City.
■ Supported City Council Goal Setting session.
■ Completed consultant interviews for City water, sewer, storm drainage facility planning.
■ Assisted Jobs Now to resolve questions related to Stream.com Agreement.
■ Provided an update of downtown parking and speed surveys. RPA from Helena assembled
data and made presentations.
■ Continued development of Department budgets.
■ Continued working with our consultant Morrison-Maierle and MDOT on the Main Street
Waterline Replacement Project.
■ Assisted in PECCD to prepare RFQ for engineering support to develop uniform application
for various state grant funding and loan programs.
■ Finished 1999 Boundary and Annexation Up -date and 2000 New Construction Up -date for
the U.S. Census Bureau.
■ Began plotting quarter section utility line ortho-photos for the Building Department.
■ Hired FVCC surveying student (part-time work/study) to assist surveyor.
■ Responded to miscellaneous right-of-way questions.
■ Submitted MACI Sidewalk Funding Proposal to MDOT.
■ Assembling City of Kalispell Sidewalk Replacement Project and Annual Sidewalk and
Curbing Bids for distribution.
■ Conducted review for CenturyTel to upgrade communications systems to the Depot Park
Well.
ENGINEERING continued.
■ Updated sidewalk drawings for the Year 2000 Sidewalk Project.
■ Installed the last 5 battery backup units on department computers.
■ Ordered upgrade equipment for AutoCAD work -station, plotter server, and City Surveyor.
■ Assisted with top and cross sections for 2nd Alley East Sewer Improvement Project.
■ Began engineering the plans for 2nd Alley East.
■ Continued updating City Special Assessments.
■ Completed three working computers from basement salvage equipment. One for the Fire
Department, one for Signs & Signals, and one for workstation for new engineer.
■ Assisted with various trouble shooting for department computers.
■ Compiled and transferred to Programmer's files for City web page as internet coordinator.
■ Set up software for workstation to access as -built plans database for temporary employee.

■ Continue to change tires on City vehicles from snow to summer.
■ Replaced automatic transmission and hydraulic hose on the Garbage truck.
■ Repaired boom on the Sewer Division's jet truck.
■ Installed prisoner cage in PD vehicle.
SANITARYISTORMSEWER DIVISON
■ Continued video and jet cleaning of sewer lines Monday through Thursday.
■ Performed weekly maintenance of sixteen lift stations each Friday.
SOLID WASTE DIVISION
■ Delivered 17 containers to new customers: 16 -100 gallon, 1-400 gallon, 0-300 gallon.
■ Repaired 5 containers and responded to 8 violations.
■ Continued weekly garbage service.
■ Continued weekly alley cleanup.
■ Training new employee for the operator's position.
STREET DIVISION
■ Continued patching and crack sealing throughout the City.
■ Continued sweeping of City Streets/Avenues.
■ Assisted the Storm Drainage Division to clean out the retention pond.
■ Attended Safety Meeting at the W.W.T.P. on March 3, 2000.
■ Removed plows from Street Division trucks.
■ Repaired utility cuts at 181h Street East and 6th Street West and East Center & Woodland
Avenue.
■ Began grading and dust control in alleys.
WATER DIVISION
WATER PRODUCTION & STORAGE:
■ Produced 60 M gallons of water: 13 M gallons upper zone and 47 M gallons lower zone.
■ Injected 128 gallons of 12% solution sodium hypochlorite to maintain an average chlorine
residual of 0.19 PPM throughout the system.
■ Continued routine maintenance on all pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, grounds,
buildings, controls, testing, and record keeping.
■ Reported 1999 Water Quality Tests to MDEQ and complied data for 1999 Consumer
Confidence Report.
■ Applied to the MDEQ and received reduced monitoring frequency for THMMs
(trihalomethanes).
■ Replaced generator batteries at Booster Station and Buffalo Hill Well.
■ Repaired Depot Well ventilating system.
■ Repaired shutters and fans at the Buffalo Well.
■ Repaired heater and lighting system in transducer pit under the water tower.
■ Repaired electrical connections at flow meter for Buffalo Booster pumps.
■ Replaced door at the Depot Well.
■ Flow tested hydrants.
WATER CONSTRUCTIONAND SYSTEMREPAIR:
■ Tagged 49 delinquent accounts on the East Side of Kalispell.
■ Completed 71 work orders during the month March.
■ Continue to replace defective water meters.
■ Replaced four (4) fire hydrants
■ lst Avenue West and lst Street West
■ 1st Avenue West and 4th Street West
■ 2nd Avenue West and 3rd Street West
■ 1st Avenue West and 5th Street West
■ Repaired fire hydrant at the Outlaw Inn.
■ Repaired curb boxes at 430 Meridian Road and 1228 7th Street West.
■ Repaired curb stop box and rod at 1131 51h Avenue West.
TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISON
■ Continued regular maintenance of signals, signs, luminaires, barricades, sight obstructions,
and Airport lighting.
■ Checked runway lights and replaced burned out bulbs.
■ Installed handicapped sign and pole at 6th Street West by 5th Avenue West for the Church.
■ Installed new breakaway and stop sign pole at 2-Mile and Meridian.
■ Straightened numerous bent poles in the downtown area.
■ Installed new "Bus Stop" sign on Liberty Street.
■ Barricaded and signed for the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
■ Signed and barricaded for fire hydrant replacements on 1st Avenue West.
■ Repaired County flashers on North Fork Road at Columbia Falls Aluminum Plant Road.
■ Measured City streets for striping this year.
■ Completed striping survey.
■ Provided 21.5 hours of support to MDOT for sign and signal repairs in NW Montana at the
following locations: Meridian/Hwy 93 North, Main/Center, Hwy 2 E/East Evergreen,
Main/lst Street, Sunnyview/Hwy 93 North, Main/6th Street, Idaho/3rd Avenue EN,
Hwy 2/Sager Lane, Main/Idaho, Hwy 93 N/Grandview Drive, Main/1 lth Street, Hwy
93/Conway Drive, and Idaho/5th Avenue WN.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIVISION
■ Completed 148 Work orders during the month of March.
■ Performed 463 Lab tests during the month of March.
■ Hauled 27 Loads of sludge during March.
■ Pressed 130,504 pounds of bio-solids.
■ February 2000 Discharge Report: No violations. The average daily flow through the Plant
was 1.82 million gallons; the total flow for the month was 52.8 million gallons.
