Highlights of monthly activity for the operating divisions of the Public Works
Department for the month of July 2000 are as follows:
ENGINEERING DIVISION
0 Completed chipseal of City streets for current year and began overlays of City streets and
alleys.
0 Continued work on sidewalk replacement project. The job is nearing completion and is ahead
of schedule.
0 Continued support of the City Hall space needs analysis effort.
0 Conducted four conference calls and one on -site project meeting with consultant regarding
status of utility facility planning project.
0 Supported final Plan -In -Hand meeting for US 93 South project.
0 Met with representative of hospital regarding traffic study requirements for Sunnyview Lane.
0 Awarded bid for the water reservoir roof replacement project, work will begin in September.
0 Awarded bid for Second Alley East Project, work will begin in mid -August.
0 Received briefing from Morrison Maierle regarding their capabilities to assist the City to
make a successful application for traffic hazard elimination funding under the TEA 21
program.
0 Met with Christensen Development Corp. regarding their planned proposal for relocation of
the county fairground.
0 Met with Dave Larson of Glacier Gold regarding the sale of the company to Johnson Bros. of
Missoula.
0 Met with MDT geotechnical engineer regarding test bore at Four Corners for US 93 project.
0 Reviewed new MDT transportation plan (STIP) and noted a change in the programmed
schedule for the Meridian Road project. Initiated effort with MDT to resolve discrepancy.
0 Met with representatives of MDEQ regarding source water protection plans and needs in the
Flathead Valley.
0 Met with Wolford Development regarding their proposed project for the intersection of
Reserve Drive and US 2.
ENGINEERING DIVISION continued...
0 Met with John Gallagher of Black & Veatch regarding their submittal for the utility facility
planning project.
0 Discussed schedule for making final repairs of water system SCADA equipment with Casne
Engineering of Spokane. Arranged for changes to get work done 30 days earlier than they
had planned.
0 Developed a water meter replacement program and fee proposal for inclusion in the budget.
0 Met with engineer for Valcon regarding their needs for sewer service to new facility on Fifth
Avenue.
0 Reviewed MPA report for Noffsinger Spring prepared by Land & Water Consulting.
0 Worked with the water crew on relocating water main and services at end of Woodland
Avenue to accommodate the MDT project.
0 Discussed the temporary traffic control at 1st Avenue East & 2" a Street with one of the local
traffic engineers.
0 Met with MDT contract surveyor to discuss intersection monumentation in vicinity of Hwy
93 South Project.
0 Responded to numerous R/W questions.
0 Assisted consultant engineers to locate data and provided mapping for utility planning project
0 Continued field surveys for utility location in Willow's Subdivision.
0 Continued field surveys for site detail and utility location in Greenacres area and new Kelly
Road Lift Station.
0 Assisted Park Department to correctly locate W. boundary line of SE'/4, Section 36. (KYAC
ball fields).

0 Continued regular maintenance of City vehicles and machinery.
0 Responded to numerous road calls.
0 Replaced the speed sensors on the ambulance.
0 Repaired electrical short in the Elgin Sweeper.
0 Repaired plugged chipper and replaced blades.
0 Repaired air brake leak on WWTP truck.
0 Replaced front brakes on the ice melt truck.
0 Repaired water spray system on the Elgin sweeper.
0 Replaced fan belt and repaired broken seat on the Park Department's mower.
0 Replaced engine belts on Sun -vac.
0 Replaced starter solenoid in Public Works' Jeep.
SANITARYISTORMSEWER DIVISON
0 Continued video and jet cleaning of sewer lines Monday through Thursday.
0 Performed weekly maintenance of sixteen lift stations each Friday.
SOLID WASTE DIVISION
0 Delivered 21containers to new customers: 14 -100 gallon, 1 -400 gallon, 6 -300 gallon.
0 Repaired 12 containers and responded to 8 violations.
0 Continued weekly garbage service.
0 Continued weekly alley cleanup, Street Division assisting.
0 Training Dan Costa on the side -arm garbage truck.
STREET DIVISION
0 General sweeping and flushing of City Streets.
0 Prepped various alleys for paving.
0 Hauled sludge from the WWTP to Olney.
0 Provided sweepers for the 4th of July Parade.
0 Assisted the Solid Waste Division with alley cleanup.
0 Patched sink holes in alleys.
0 Prepped and patched flow lines at 1 lth Street East and 5th Avenue East.
0 Did various cutouts and patching throughout the City.
0 Removed chips from the streets/avenues in the Downtown Tax Increment District.
WATER DIVISION
WATER PRODUCTION & STORAGE:
0 Produced 191 M gallons of water: 49 M gallons upper zone and 142 M gallons lower zone.
0 Injected 424 gallons of sodium hypochlorite, 12% solution to maintain an average chlorine
residual of 0.25 PPM throughout the system.
0 Continued routine maintenance on all pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, grounds,
buildings, controls, testing, and record keeping.
0 Renewed the radio telemetry license.
0 Painted the exterior of the Depot Well pump station.
0 Replaced starting batteries for the Grandview generator and replaced fuses and diodes in the
control panel.
0 Reinstalled flow meter at the Buffalo Well.
0 Advertised and received bids for the alarm system at Noffsinger Spring.
0 Made repairs at Noffsinger Spring after vandalism.
0 Rebuilt chlorine pump at the Deport Well.
0 Met with Roger Noble and reviewed report on Noffsinger Spring.
0 Met with Craig Caprara of HDR and discussed water system needs.
0 Met with Terry Dahlquist of Morrison-Maierle, Inc. and discussed telemetry problems.
0 Gathered four (4) years of pump records for the Public Works Department.
WATER CONSTRUCTION AND SYSTEM REPAIR:
0 Tagged 38 delinquent accounts on the East Side of Kalispell.
0 Completed 92 work orders during the month July.
0 Repaired water services at 311 4th Avenue West, 35 5th Avenue West, and 444 1" Avenue
West.
0 Marked water valves for the overlay project.
0 Repaired backflow preventor at Sunset Court.
0 Exercised valves on the West Side of Kalispell.
0 Installed 420' of 8" water main at Willow Glen and Woodland Avenue.
TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISON
0 Continued regular maintenance of signals, signs, luminaires, barricades, sight obstructions,
and Airport lighting.
0 Signed and barricaded for the 4th of July parade.
0 Continued to prune sight obstructions.
0 Replaced missing beacon top on Airport tower.
0 Began prepping streets for paint.
0 Trimmed trees for sight obstruction of signs.
0 Measured distances for the striping of City Streets to go out to bid.
0 Repaired light failures in Polson and Whitefish for the MDT.
TRAFFIC SIGNS & SIGNALS DIVISON continued...
0 Assisted with the signal turn on for the MDT signal updates at the following locations;
Reserve Drive/Hwy 2 East, Hwy 2/Hwy 35, and Sunset/Wyoming.
0 City signal at 1st Ave E/2"d Street was put out of service due to an auto accident. Pole and
base need to be replaced. The work is scheduled to be done Friday, July 28, 2000.
0 Provided 75.5 hours of support to MDOT for sign and signal repairs in NW Montana at the
following locations: Hwy 93 N/Conway, Hwy 93 N/Sunnyview, Sunset/Wyoming, Hwy 93
S/18th Street, Hwy 2 West/Springcreek, Main/1 lth Street, Elmo — Hwy 93 S/1" Ave, Hwy 93
S/18th Street East, Hwy 93/1" Avenue, Idaho/5th Avenue WN, Hwy 93/Hwy 35 — Polson,
Spokane/2"d Street, Hwy 93 N/Mt. Mall, and Hwy 2 East/East Reserve.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIVISION
0 126 Work orders were completed during the month of July.
0 413 Lab tests were performed during the month of July.
0 20 Loads of sludge were hauled during July.
0 91,976 pounds of bio-solids were pressed.
0 June Discharge Permit Report: No violations. The total flow for the month was 61 million
gallons; the average daily flow was 2 million gallons.
