Highlights of monthly activity for the operating divisions of the Public Works
Department for the month of October 2000 are as follows:
ENGINEERING DIVISION
0 Met with the County to review details of a proposed co-op agreement for construction of an
equipment storage building.
0 Met with Wolford Development to discuss potential retail development project.
0 Attended Montana League of Cities meeting in Missoula.
0 Attended University of Wisconsin short course on the state of the practice in neighborhood
design and traffic control.
0 Met with the County Road Superintendent to discuss their proposals for road dedications to
the City.
0 Met with the City Council and FRDO staff to review the essential ingredients of a successful
growth policy plan.
0 Continued regular project progress meetings with HDR for the utility facility planning
proj ect.
0 Met with Swartz Engineering to discuss a potential frontage road to serve parcels west of US
93 near Kelly Road.
0 Met with RPA to review field data collection related to the downtown streetscape project.
0 Attended a presentation for a modified proposal to develop the Domesite PUD.
0 Supported MDT meeting to review status of utility design and relocation for the US 93
South project.
0 Attempted to tie-in the new 20 inch water main but encountered unanticipated problems that
caused a delay. Identified numerous weak spots in old cast iron water lines that required
repairs.
0 Contractor continued construction of new Main Street water main project.
0 Contractor continued replacement of roofs over the water reservoirs.
0 Assisted the Sewer and Street Divisions to determine elevations for City Shop vehicle mud
wash down basin.
0 Inspected possible alley encroachment at request of resident in 5th Avenue EN area and
discussed with the City Attorney.
0 Completed the following field surveys of recent additions and projects to locate newer utility
installations; Greenacres, Willows I and Il, Greatview, Ashley Park III, 91h Street West
reconstruction, 5th Avenue WN water main, Hilltop/Salish Court sewer, Buffalo Stage IV and
V, Village Plaza, Ranchview, Corporate Way Apartments, Smith's area and MDOT sewer,
Lantis Assisted Living area, and 2nd Alley East sewer.

0 Continued regular maintenance of City vehicles and machinery.
0 Responded to numerous road calls.
0 Repaired wiring on the Elgin Sweeper.

0 Replaced boom drive chain on sewer jet truck.
0 Modified Elgin sweeper for leaf pickup and completed repairs on the leaf machine.

0 Repaired the leaf loader.
0 Continued video and jet cleaning of sewer lines Monday through Thursday.
0 Performed weekly maintenance of sixteen lift stations each Friday.
0 Delivered 17 containers to new customers: 10 -100 gallon, 0 -400 gallon, 7 -300 gallon.
0 Repaired 8 containers and responded to 8 violations.
0 Continued weekly garbage service.
0 Continued weekly alley cleanup, Street Division assisting.
0 Continue training of new solid waste operator.
0 General sweeping and flushing of City Streets.
0 Alley grading ongoing.
0 Plumbed in deicer tanks at the City yard.
0 Assisted the TSS Division with painting various crosswalks throughout the City.
0 Assisted the Water Division with water mains and hydrants.
0 Hauled dirt from Teton Avenue to Quincy Loop for Community Development.
0 Began leaf pickup.
0 Assisted the water division on Wednesday, October 25"', with main break repairs.
0 Produced 79 M gallons of water: 14 M gallons upper zone and 65 M gallons lower zone.
0 Injected 273 gallons of sodium hypochlorite, 12% solution to maintain an average chlorine
residual of 0.25 PPM throughout the system.
0 Continued routine maintenance on all pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, grounds,
buildings, controls, testing, and record keeping.
0 Installed and calibrated turbidity meter at Noffsinger Springs.
0 Replaced power supply at Depot Well telemetry controls.
0 Reset generator exercise time and days.
0 Filled and drained reservoirs for roofing contractor.
0 Operated system manually while large reservoir was off line.
0 Worked with contractor, water main contractor and the City water crews during main breaks.
0 Tagged 72 delinquent accounts on the West Side of Kalispell.
0 Completed 95 work orders during the month October.
0 Replaced:
0 1" curb box, rod, and curb stop at 95 Indian Trails
0 Curb box and rod at 346 61h Avenue West
0 Repaired:
0 1" service line at South Woodland
0 Service line from water main to curb stop at 435 5th Avenue East
0 Repaired water service at 627 2"d Avenue East
0 Repaired the 6" water main four times on Main Street.
0 Worked on wash bay at the City Yard.
0 Dug and lowered two 3/4" water service lines at South Woodland.
0 Repaired 6" tee on Main Street, repaired 3-3/4" water service lines and 1-1" service line.
0 Checked valves and repaired an 18" bell joint on Main Street.
0 6x3/4 water tap at 1 Oth Avenue West and 7th Street West.
0 12x6" and a 12x1" water tap at the Pepsi Plant on Kelly Road.
0 Repaired a 6" main on Main Street.
0 Worked on 18" valve on Main Street.
0 Repaired a 4" main on Main Street.
0 Repaired 8 main breaks!
0 Continued regular maintenance of signals, signs, luminaires, barricades, sight obstructions,
and Airport lighting.
0 Attended factory training school in Helena on October 3rd through October 5th on radio
communications between traffic signals
0 Did luminaries survey — burned out luminaries replaced by Northwest Signs.
0 Installed new poles at Salish Court and Hilltop Avenue for stop signs.
0 Painted various yellow curbs.
0 Barricaded and signed for the Flathead High School Home Coming Parade.
0 Installed "No Parking" signs on Northwest Lane near the Jr. High School.
0 Changed lane signs at Idaho & 4th Avenue EN from right only to right & straight and left
only.
0 Put up the Care Banner for Red Ribbon Week.
0 Installed new poles and signs at the new Smith's Store for "No Parking".
0 Installed temporary signs at Nevada & 2"d Avenue EN.
0 Removed the "City Entrance" sign on Hwy 93 North. It will be relocated at Reserve and
Hwy 93 North.
0 Signed and barricaded for several water main digs for water line repairs.
0 Provided 117 hours of support to MDOT for sign and signal repairs in NW Montana at the
following locations: MDT School in Helena, Hwy 2 East/Sager Lane, Idaho/0' Avenue EN,
Hwy 93 North/West Reserve, Idaho/5th Avenue WN, Main Street/llth Street, and Hwy 2
East/East Evergreen Drive.
0 125 Work orders were completed during the month of October.
0 332 Lab tests were performed during the month of October.
0 22 Loads of sludge were hauled during October.
0 93,886 pounds of bio-solids were pressed.
0 There were no discharge permit violations for September. The average daily plant flow was
1.7 million gallons; the total flow for the month was 52 million gallons.
0 Both primary clarifiers have been redone and are back in service.
0 The gravity thickener was inspected. The 5 year warranty period ends February 2001. The
unit, part of the former plant, is now 18 years old and will require extensive repair in the next
year.
