PRESS RELEASE
January 5, 2012
Recently the City of Kalispell came to an agreement with David Nielsen, who retired as the
Helena City Attorney December 31, to provide the services of Interim City Manager.
Unfortunately, Mr. Nielsen is now unable to provide these services.
Before accepting the offer of Interim City Manager, Mr. Nielsen was assured by the state office
of PERS (Public Employees Retirement System) that the position with Kalispell would not affect
his retirement. On January 4, he was advised by the PERS office that the assurances he had
received previously from that office about his eligibility to immediately draw retirement was in
error. As a result, Mr. Nielsen is financially unable to accept the terms offered to him by the
City.
Mayor Tammi Fisher states that she understands Mr. Nielsen's decision and wishes him the best
of luck in his future endeavors. The City Council will officially announce its decision on the
position of Interim City Manager at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, January 9, 2012.
