REPORT TO. Mayor Tammi Fisher and City Council
FROM: Mike Baker, Director, Parks and Recreation
Jane Howington, City Manager
SUBJECT: Kalispell Youth Athletic Complex Rotary Mower Purchase
MEETING DATE: December 6, 2010
BACKGROUND.* Currently at the Kalispell Youth Athletic Complex the Parks Department
maintains a total of 138 acres (30 athletic fields, 2 mini parks, parking areas, trails and
infrastructure). In an effort to maintain and meet the high demand for quality athletic turf at this
facility, it is essential to have equipment capable of performing economically, efficiently, and
effectively. The mowing unit specified in this purchase request has these features, insuring a
quality safe athletic environment at KYAC.
The purchase of this mowing unit allows us to cut a 16' swath as compared to our existing
mower of 10' swath. Typically, a 10' mower can mow approximately 9 acres per hour. It is
anticipated that mowing rates can be accelerated to approximately 20 acres per hour with a 16'
swath. we anticipate substantial reduction of mowing time and an increase in our efficiency
with this specialized piece of equipment.
The Parks and Recreation Department FY 10111 approved budget (Kalispell Youth Athletic
Complex division) included the purchase of a Toro 455D mower. The City advertised for bid,
we received two inquiries from vendors, and one sealed bid from Midland Implement Company
for $69,900.00
RECOMMENDATION., Award bid from Midland Implement for the purchase of Toro
Groundsmaster 5900/5910.
FISCAL EFFECTS: Equipment purchase of $69,900.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Council.
Respectively subn1itted,
