RE: DSL - Well Evaluation
Dear John:
We have acquired what appears to be the available information on
the subject well. Our review and recommendations follow the WQB
circular for groundwater sources.
Quality Water quality of the artisan aquifer is
excellent. Notes and data are available to
confirm the quality. Tests should be
conducted prior to finalizing decisions.
Location Land uses in the area surrounding the well are
agricultural and should not impact the water
quality. Clear zone easements should be
obtained for the well as a well head
protection zone.

Well
Construction
A 13 hour test was conducted, apparently by
the driller, Biggs Drilling. No detailed
record is available. The rate recorded is
3000 gallons per minute. Detailed test
pumping will be necessary for verification of
hydrological characteristics. Testing at 3000
GPM would allow production at 2000 gallons per
minute.
There are no notes on grouting of the surface
pipe. This would be required for well
protection. Casing is 20" to 200 feet and the
16" to 400 feet. There are no indicators of
the seal. A television inspection should
reveal the method of sealing. If there is no
seal, one may have to be installed or a
deviation received from the WQB.

Casing wall thickness meets the standards.
The lower casing is perforated, 12
perforations per foot, each 3/81' x 2 1/2111±.
Total inlet area is 8.44 sq. ft. Allowable
flow at 0.1 feet per second inlet velocity is
etc 379 gallons. The inlet velocity at 3000
gallons per minute is 0.79 feet per second.
Velocities this high in moderate to hard water
1462 t308 may cause mineral encrustation in the
openings. Before requesting a deviation from
314e the standards for the increased velocity, the

to determine the
perforations condition.
Permitting
The water right is to the
state for
irrigation
on 620 acres. An application to
transfer,
change the place of use,
change the
period of
use and change the use
would be
necessary.
Review by DNRC would
be similar
to new
application.
Recommendations The easiest information to obtain is yield and
drawdown data. If the City wishes to pursue
acquisition, the well should be test pumped.
The existing pump may be used but a meter will
be necessary to determine flow. An access
point in the pumped well and any nearby well
must be installed to allow close monitoring of
pumping levels.
In the fall we recommend the pump be removed
and the well televised. At the same time, the
excavation occurs to determine the presence or
not of surface grouting. If the well is not
grouted, a deviation would be necessary. if
the transition between the casing is not
sealed it would require sealing or a
deviation.
Summary The well has an oral history of good
production. Televising the well may document
deficiencies in construction which may not be
correctable. The major problems are the inlet
velocities and sealing.

The well is approximately 7600 feet from the
existing 12" water main at Grandview and US
93. An extension will be required to connect
to the well, minimum diameter would be 12" but
to provide flows from the elevated tank
headloss may be too high. For planning, we
recommend a 16" main. Hydraulic analysis may
indicate a 14" main would be adequate.
Our experience indicates the City
approved, spend a large sum of
obstacles which are insurmountable
