I am writing to apprise you of the status of the sign permit
application which you submitted to this office on August 23rd.
After visiting the site and reviewing the Scoreboard's file
pertaining to existing signs, it has been determined that a
permit cannot be issued at this time.
Upon annexation to the city, the Scoreboard property was zoned
B-1, Neighborhood Commercial. The City of Kalispell's Zoning
Ordinance contains very restrictive standards for signs in this
district. Signage for a non-residential use such as yours is
limited to 24 square feet (total!).
Our records indicate that the existing signs at the bar havi
been properly registered with the city. I have attached copies
of the permit and photos of the registered signs. The total
square footage of the registered signs is, according to the
permit, just under 395 square feet. Obviously, the Scoreboart
exceeds the allowable square footage at this time. Because the
signs were properly registered with the city, this isn't a
problem and the existing signs can remain "as is". However, if
you want to add additional signage, it would first be necessary
to reduce the existing signage to the point th - at all signage on
the site (existing plus proposed) meets the requirements of the
sign code.

Please find herewith a copy of a letter from Brian Wood to
Colleen Thompson who is the assistant manager at the Scoreboard Pub
and a copy of a letter that Colleen wrote regarding the matter.
Brain has the original application but before requesting he
approve it I wanted to send this information to you.
Although as Colleen's memorandum indicates there are some
questions about the propriety of denial now, that is really not at
issue. The question is can we make accommodation.
The Scoreboard proposes to eliminate one of the 4 by 8 signs
on the property, which has city licence number 01400, and appears
as one of the four signs listed at item 4 on the map I have
included. In addition, it would delete the Pork Chop John sign
which is number 7 on the map which also has been previously
approved by the City. The Pork Chop John sign, to my
understanding, is 5 by 6 and two sided. The deletions would
effectively cause the following signed square footage to be removed
from the Scoreboard sign square footage:
1. The 4 by 8 - 32 square feet;
2. Two sided 5 by 6 - 60 square feet; for a total of 92
square feet.
The new sign is a 4 by 8 but is also two sided that would
yield a net of 64 square feet.
My question for you, that I wish you would advise Brian and
myself, is by deleting the two signs indicated herein, is it not
true that we come in compliance with your interpretation of the
regulation as explained by your memorandum dated November 4, 1992
to Mr. Kerzman from you regarding non conforming sign and sign area
allowance. If you concur with this we will go ahead and process
the additional application.
