Curt and I met with the contractor today and they are aiming for the
week of April 20th to give us the old part of the bioreactor back. We
are currently taking down cell 6, so the liquid goes cells 1 through 5,
then down the channel to the new cells 14 & 15. Then cell 6 comes back
up in about a week, and cell 4 goes down to remove old piping and the
old alum line, which shouldn’t take more than a couple of days. Then
cell 1 comes down for concrete work (new channel to it), and we will
start up the old bioreactor without this cell, which I think will be OK.
Then about a week later we will make the transition to the new
fermenter, which will be tough, but at least the bioreactor won’t be
short. I told them the fermenter can’t go on-line until I have the old
bioreactor back. So, it all depends on weather, flows, and our ability
to outwit it all. This will be a tough month, but I will get Bill
Oldham to work with me so I make sure I don’t do something stupid!

How long do you think you will run with these cells down for retro-fit?
Will the ones in-work be returned to service any time soon so you are
not plowing deeper into dangerous territory or is it only going to get
worse until all the work is done??

We met the permit for March, but it was very close on BOD! I attached a
spreadsheet showing that the plant wasn’t running great in its short
circuited form anyway, but it really looked bad following the 6 days of
sustained flows over 4 million gallons per day (see the results for
3/25-27). The flow is slowly subsiding—only 3.5 mgd now. Another cell
was taken down today, so we are now running even more crippled, so I
don’t know how April will go. FYI, the permit limits for TSS & BOD are
15 mg/l for the week and 10 mg/l for the month; TOTAL P is 1 mg/l for
the month; E.COLI is doing fine, but there to show how the numbers
increased as the flow escalated. I think some time ago you and I talked
about the fact that BOD would be our limiting factor; sure looks that
way, doesn’t it. Since this plant started in late 1992 I believe this
is the worst month, and certainly last week was the worst week ever.
Yuk.
That’s all the good news I have for now!
Joni
