Mayor Hunter and Members of the Kalispell City Council:
My name is Danielle Bundrock, and I am a resident of the Northridge neighborhood adjacent to the
proposed Birchwood development. I also work professionally in the affordable housing sector, although I
am submitting these comments in my personal capacity. I am writing to express my strong support for
the Birchwood development, Resolution 6337 and the first reading of Ordinance 1954.
Kalispell needs more homes that are attainable to people across a range of incomes and stages of life.
Birchwood's mixed -income approach, along with its variety of detached homes, cottages and
townhomes, will expand housing choices and create additional homeownership opportunities for people
who are increasingly being priced out of our community.
Mixed -income neighborhoods are strong neighborhoods. They allow people with different incomes,
occupations, ages and family structures to live near one another and share in the same schools, parks,
pathways and community amenities. Providing a variety of home types also gives residents more
opportunities to remain in Kalispell as their household size, income or housing needs change.
As someone who lives next to the proposed site, I understand that this development will bring change,
construction activity and additional traffic close to my own home. I believe the concerns raised by nearby
residents should be taken seriously and appropriately addressed through the project's conditions of
approval and subsequent engineering and subdivision reviews. At the same time, those impacts should
be weighed against the significant community benefit of adding thoughtfully planned housing in an area
designated for residential growth.
The incorporation of sidewalks, pedestrian connections, open space and neighborhood gathering areas
will help Birchwood become part of the surrounding community rather than an isolated development. It
represents a thoughtful and efficient use of land located near existing neighborhoods, schools,
recreational facilities and public infrastructure.
From both my professional experience and my perspective as a nearby resident, Birchwood represents
the kind of development Kalispell needs: mixed -income, connected and designed to provide more
attainable housing opportunities. I respectfully ask the City Council to approve Resolution 6337 and the
first reading of Ordinance 1954.
