Chief,
Today I was driving down the road, and observed a car fire off of Hwy 2. There were people standing
outside the vehicle and people in vehicles in the area of the car fire. I drove past the vehicle about
15 yards on pulled over into the parking area to help suppress the fire. At the time I did not know if
the fire department was even notified and they were not on scene. I quickly grabbed my fire
extinguisher and sprayed the engine compartment to suppress the fire. While doing so I observed a
fire unit approaching. I stopped using the extinguisher and walked back to my vehicle to leave.
I secured the partially used extinguisher in the proper location in the Rv near the passenger exit, as
I was walking to towards the drivers side. I was approached by a fireman and he told me I need to
leave. I said I just stopped to put the fire out. His response seemed agitated and he said," You did
not put the fire out, you just knocked it down" and he then said again to leave and said "You don't
block the road". He appeared to be upset.
Just a few things. First I am not the type of person that would drive by a situation and not attempt to
help if no help is there. Unfortunately too many people do that nowadays. I spent 20 years in law
enforcement, and 12 years in the military (100% service connected injuries). I received specific
training in fire suppression and have done it numerous times throughout the years. Once the
professional firefighters arrived on the scene. I stopped doing what I was doing and went to
leave. Unfortunately I was approached by an unprofessional firefighter (maybe having a bad
day). His comment was I just knocked the fire down and didn't put the fire out, so why approach me
within minutes of arrival and continue to argue with me. Shouldn't putting the fire out come first. In
regards to partially parking the road, I did not know at the time I parked the 387" Rv was extended a
foot into the traffic lane. My focus was suppressing the vehicle fire and protecting people in the
area of the fire.
If a firefighter can not be courteous at least be professional. He could be an amazing
firefighter, but maybe if he is not a people person, leave contacting people in the community to a
different firefighter.
