Subject: EXTERNAL Regarding Kalispell's Water Safety
Montana currently ranks 49th in water safety, and Kalispell earned an F in its 2026 water safety
overview. What is being done to rectify this? I cannot believe Montana and Kalispell have fallen so
far so quickly.
Do you drink the tap water? Do you allow your children and grandchildren to drink our tap
water? Perhaps you and other members of the council can afford expensive water filtration
systems. Most of us can't.
Clean air, water, and food safety should be a basic priority for the council. If this is not important to
you, perhaps you are no longer fit to serve this community.

Honestly, it's disappointing that such a "study" would even make the press as it was severely misleading.

Thankyou for reaching out with your concerns regarding recent online reports and rankings related to
Kalispell's drinking water. We understand that information presented online can be concerning,
especially when it includes letter grades or rankings that suggest poor water quality. We would like to
provide some additional context regarding these reports.
The rankings being circulated are produced by independent third -party organizations and are not issued
by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Montana Department of Environmental Quality
(DEQ), or other drinking water regulatory agencies. These organizations rely on their own methodologies,
which can inaccurately combine data from multiple public water systems within a geographic area,
incorporate outdated historical information, and evaluate water systems differently than state and
federal regulators. As a result, their rankings are independent of EPA and Montana DEQ regulatory
assessments and may reach conclusions that differ from official compliance determinations and current
regulatory status.
Kalispell's drinking water system is regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and is monitored in
accordance with EPA and Montana DEQ requirements. Water quality testing is conducted throughout the
year, and the results are reviewed by regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with applicable drinking
water standards. The City has been transparent in sharing sampling results and regulatory updates with
the public and will continue to do so as new information and standards become available. Our most
recent Consumer Confidence Report, which summarizes water quality testing results and system

Third -party websites may present data in a way that results in a low grade or ranking, and those ratings
do not necessarily reflect the overall performance, regulatory compliance status, or current quality of a
public water system. For that reason, we highly encourage residents to review information from official
sources, including the City's Consumer Confidence Report, Montana DEQ, EPA drinking water
resources, and City staff.
Kalispell remains committed to providing safe, reliable drinking water and to keeping residents informed
through ongoing monitoring, public reporting, and continued investment in our water infrastructure. If
you have questions about a specific contaminant, water quality result, treatment process, or any aspect
of Kalispell's drinking water program, we encourage you to contact Public Works directly. Staff would be
happy to discuss your concerns, explain our testing and monitoring programs, and review water quality
information in greater detail.
