Subject: EXTERNAL Parking Recommendations
Nothing could be more chilling to the downtown retailer than the recommendation to double
parking tickets and increase enforcement to such a punishing level as has been described in
Sunday's Daily Inter Lake. How welcoming to the tourist and locals.
It's actually mind-boggling that this is seen as some kind of solution and some kind of way to
move more traffic foot wise or other shoppers into the retailers store. It will have the absolute
opposite effect.
Since 1976 there have been city plans (yes 1976 !) for parking buildings downtown. Grown up
cities have parking structures in their downtown.
There is obviously a disconnect between the chamber/ parking committee and the retailers.
Service businesses do not have the same requirements as retailers.
I'm certain all would be curious to see this list of businesses that agree with the chamber and
the parking committee's position.
Retailers want people to spend time and have time to visit several shops. It might be more
productive to get some input from retailers who have been involved with the Kalispell
Syndicate.
Sadly, I think the chamber and the now defunct downtown business association are really out
of touch with the downtown retail community which is quite unfortunate.
This recommendation on parking is not a business friendly move for our downtown retailers.
