Thank you for incorporating the sandhill cranes "designated area of concern" in the final
Kalispell Plan. You may not realize how important these few staging areas are to wildlife. I
know this was a difficult decision for some of you, but it was the right one.
We are blessed to live in the "last best place", a designation that is easy to take for granted. We
certainly need to provide more affordable housing for residents, but also need to consider how
to make those decisions compatible with the environment that supports us. Money drives too
many of our decisions. We often forget that short term 'gains' can cost much over the long
term. Private "rights" do not include the destruction of the environment or impacting the
"rights" of the broader population—people as well as wildlife.
In the future, please always consider the organisms with whom we share our community.
Once lost, they cannot be regained.
Thanks for your service.
