Subject: EXTERNAL Yes, Canada has speed bumps
When raising the issue of traffic calming on East Oregon,a couple people told me that we can't use
speed bumps in Montana: it messes with snow plows, etc. Wow, I thought. That's a bummer. What
does Canada do?
Actually, Canada uses speed bumps and speed cushions: Cities like Toronto, Edmonton, and
Calgary all use speed bumps. They call them speed HUMPS but it is the same thing and for this
purpose(which sounds a lot like what we are facing with East Oregon):
Speed humps are installed to slow down vehicles, reduce excessive speeds, curb speeding and
reckless driving, and create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists. They are also used to
deter drivers from using residential roads as shortcuts.
Calgary just finished a pilot study of speed cushions and humps. The City provides a quick-read
summary, together with a link to the report findings,

hump.html#:-:text=The%20City%20of%2OCalgary%20installs,30%2D40%20km/h.
I don't know about you, reader, but this brings out my competitive side. If Canada can have speed
bumps, so can we.
