Century Paving finished up on Wednesday August 11 with everything that has to be done to open the runway. This has been a huge undertaking and has finally come to fruition through the efforts of the Montana Pilots Association and funding by the Recreational Aviation Foundation. Century Paving of Lewistown has donated labor and equipment to the project and without them the project still wouldn't be finished. The runway has been mowed and windsocks will be up by the weekend of the work session. Just to give you and idea of what needs to be done: Some grass needs to be seeded--Jeff Patnode in charge The toilet has some settling around it that has to be filled in--Dan Prill in charge The campground needs to be cleaned up--John McKenna in charge The gates need to be installed on the airplane corral--Tim Robertson in charge Century Paving will provide steaks for Saturday night so please RSVP to Tim Robertson at trobertson@centurypaving.com or Jeff Patnode at jeffrey.patnode@gmail.com. If you don't RSVP you may find yourself without a Steak. There is no water so you will have to bring your own. Russian Flat is at about 6400' elevation and about 3000' long. Landing to the west is uphill and is the preferred way. Takeoff to the East. There are two windsocks, one north of the runway on the west end and one south of the runway on the east end. It's location is N46o 43' 28.24" W110o 24' 41.07". If you Google Earth the runway you can see it there. As always you need to research the airstrip for yourself and determine your airplanes capabilities. Nose wheel planes can go in but please be careful. Call intentions on the 122.90 frequency. If you drive go from Utica to Sapphire Village and then follow the main road to Russian Flat. It is about 29 miles. Turn in at the main campground and follow the post and pole road to the aircraft campground. It can easily be seen from the main gravel road. We have a permit for the post and pole road travel. There are still cattle in the area so the airplanes will have to be parked in the airplane corral. There are no tie downs available so you need to bring your own. This can be a windy area so make sure you have them. Please bring shovels and rakes, bug dope, and sun screen and come have some fun at the newest airstrip in the US. Practice day will be Friday, July 9th with the competition being held on Saturday. Sunday will be an alternate event day in case of bad weather. So far, between 10 and 15 aircraft are expected to compete with many of them being from Canada, Oregon and Washington. The airport will remain open to air traffic at all times, but NOTAMS will be posted 48 hrs in advance to the event. All spectators will be restricted to areas outside the fenced airport boundries.
