Subject: EXTERNAL Downtown grant
I would urge you not to spend our tax dollars and grant money to revamp Main Street turning
it into single lanes. Trying to parallel park on the main road is already difficult and the traffic
backing up would only worsen this. Parking has long been the issue in this area and the so
called addition of a parking garage has turned into "affordable housing" which consumed all of
the additional parking that would have been garnered. And now that project has been pushed
back significantly and may not happen.
I went to lunch with a friend downtown last week and having to move your car so you don't
get a parking ticket means that you have lunch and then don't stay to walk around and explore.
This is a foundational issue that undermines the urge to walk downtown and shop much more
than widened sidewalks and outdoor seating.
Another issue that would be more significant to address would be attracting restaurants and
stores with longer hours and days. There is nothing open on a Sunday at all or even a Saturday
after 6pm. Sidewalk crowding had never been the issue.
